    SUMMARY

    Los Angeles County (LAC) Department of Health Services (DHS) Women’s Health Programs and Innovation (WHPI) is seeking skilled Health Educators to assist in an evidence-based targeted curriculum and support services program. The position will work within a network of Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC)-contracted providers, DHS clinics, and community-based agencies, throughout the county. Support is needed in WHPI’s programs to deliver health education classes and community outreach to provide group health education and individual care coordination services in the community, at providers sites and at DHS clinics.

    Patient/client services need to be provided in Spanish. Spanish language dominion in reading, writing, and speaking is required, and the ability to carry out the essential job functions of the position which necessitate Spanish speaking ability to meet the needs of patients/clients.  to develop, present, facilitate, coordinate, and other functions which are required to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking patients/clients.

    Health education and outreach activities include both topics and linkages to care related to the gamut of group and individual services and referrals spanning substance use, family planning, pre-conception planning, pregnancy options, perinatal, postpartum, abortion or pregnancy termination, sexual health, and sexually transmitted infections.

    Targeted patients are high-risk of reproductive age and may be dealing with one or a combination of issues related to their reproductive age such as experiencing socio-economic distress, domestic violence, mental health, children, and family issues, or receiving treatment for a substance use disorder (SUD).

    In accordance with the program evaluation, duties include data collection utilizing evidence-based tools to demonstrate grant deliverables outcome measures.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Adheres to HIPAA privacy and confidentiality standards and practices, in all areas of service delivery, including evaluation activities.
    • Implements and assists in the delivery, tailoring and evaluation of programmed health education and outreach focused on topics and linkages to care related to substance use, family planning, pre-conception planning, pregnancy options, perinatal, postpartum, abortion or pregnancy termination, sexual health, and sexually transmitted infections.
    • Work, plan, develop, present, facilitate, coordinate, and carry out work related functions to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking patients/clients, possessing, and demonstrating dominion of the Spanish language.
    • Leads and supports the health education services through coordination to establish class schedules and coordinate outreach events.
    • Works collaboratively and supports Health Education Assistants in the delivery of health education classes, individual care coordination, and outreach activities.
    • Travels to multiple sites throughout LA County including SUD treatment sites, DHS clinics, and community-based organizations to provide health education classes, and individual care coordination.  
    • Leads and supports multi-disciplinary collaborative relationships with internal and external agencies and community-based networks through outreach and linkages to care at events such health fairs at secondary schools, colleges, and universities.
    • Travels to multiple sites throughout LA County to collect data according to the program’s evaluation. Provides evaluation data collection reports as requested.

    • Attends assigned meetings, documents, and appropriately relays verbal and written information.
    • Communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively with fellow staff.
    • Participate in team building efforts to promote positive interpersonal relationships with team members.
    • Participate in relevant training as necessary to expand professionally and increase knowledge in related program areas included but not limited to substance use, reproductive and sexual health, and family planning.
    • Adheres to work policies, quality improvement strategies, regulatory standards, and best practices to achieve compliance in outcome measures.
    • Other duties may be assigned as needed.
    REQUIRED EDUCATION/CLEARANCES

    A master’s degree from an accredited college and/or university accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. Applicants with related master’s degree in a psychology, sociology, health, and related fields may be considered upon presentation of verifiable education/experience directly related to the Description and Essential Job Functions listed in this job description.

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Experience delivering health education curricula on an individual and group basis.

    Education/training and experience related to directly providing abortion and family planning services, reproductive health, or similar relevant education/training.

    WORK SCHEDULE

    Regular work schedule is Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Some flexibility is required to adjust schedule for evening classes, earlier training, and weekend outreach events.
