Health Underwriting Director directs and oversees the health insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups for medical and/or dental insurance. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Health Underwriting Director manages staff of underwriters at the organization. Provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications. Additionally, Health Underwriting Director has a strong knowledge of the underwriting discipline. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Health Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     Tri Pointe Connect is looking for an experienced individual to join our talented group as a Director of Underwriting/Credit Risk.

     

    Position Highlights: Provides oversight and direction to the Underwriting team while ensuring compliance with investor ad agency guidelines. Directs the risk management functions for the organization. Manges the overall performance of the department to meet/exceed company's standards. The Director of Underwriting/Credit Risk will help build a strong partnership with various agencies such as FNMA/FHMLC, HUD, VA and other investors as applicable. The Director of Underwriting/Credit Risk displays a strong desire for unparalleled customer service, is willing to work in a team environment, employs excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), is well-organized, has a solid mortgage industry knowledge and is extremely detail oriented. 

     

     

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for risk identification, assessment, and mitigation.
    • Establishes acceptable risk tolerances for the organization, products and/or product lines.
    • Quantifies potential risks and seeks to limit liability or exposure through the implementation of risk reduction strategies thereby insuring the organization against loss.
    • Implements loass prevention strategies meant to protect the organization’s assets.
    • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
    • Executes performance goals established by the leadership team.
    • Directs the underwriting team to meet and/or exceed company standards to include productivity goals, investment quality of the loans origination, service levels to the processing and origination teams, exceed overall quality standards.
    • Keep up to date on all agency guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, USDA and other bond programs).
    • Maintain familiarity with standard secondary marketing requirements on all loan types and remain knowledgeable on changes taking place in the market/industry to include attending agency or secondary marketing conferences.
    • Ensure all specifics of internal loan program summaries are followed per investor guidelines through daily use and interpretation.
    • Act a liaison with Secondary Marketing (Lender Works) and branch personnel in regards to offering alternative programs on loans that are deemed ineligible as initially submitted.
    • Utilize approved automated underwriting systems (LP, DU, GUS) in the decision making process.
    • Remain familiar with all aspects of the automated underwriting systems (AUS) and how they affect loan approval decisions.
    • Communicate approvals, declines, pends to branch personnel.
    • Conduct ongoing training to Operations and Production employees.
    • Communicate underwriting policies/practices/changes with all staff.
    • Communicate underwriting goals and turnaround times to leadership.
    • Review and analyze credit/income/asset documentation submitted in order to make a sound determination of creditworthiness.
    • Ensure that property appraisals meet standard investor requirements.
    • Create appropriate Approval/Denial Notifications in the loan origination system (Encompass) per acceptable standards and company policies.
    • Perform second level review for high-risk loans.
    • Serve as underwriter of last resort for all denied or pended loans.
    • Review and analyze all credit/income/asset documentation submitted in order to make a sound determination of creditworthiness.
    • Approve VA appraisals if LAPP designated.
    • Ensure data submitted by Loan Officers is accurate and that loan program summaries and agency guidelines have been met.
    • Work with HR to recruit and hire direct reports.
    • Initiate and monitor the application process for Underwriting designations with FHA and/or VA. (ie, DE, LAPP)
    • Manage and motivate team members to ensure consistent and maximum performance levels.
    • Conduct formal review process and on-going performance management.
    • Prepare responses for agency or internal audits for submission to the agency auditor or infernal QA function.
    • Participate in on-going training with HUD/VA to maintain designations.

     

    Position Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
    • Minimum of 7 years of management experience.
    • Minimum of 10 years underwriting and/or underwriting/operations/production experience, builder preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of FHA/VA/Conventional loan types.
    • Strong overall computer skills, MS Office products.
    • DE/SAR LAPP preferred.
    • Detailed knowledge of the secondary market, risk management and credit worthiness.
    • Encompass LOS experience preferred
    • Must be able to work in the office located in Scottsdale, AZ.

    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess risk and recommend appropriate action to ensure loan quality and salability.
    • Ability to resolve time-sensitive escalations in a urgent manner, ensuring processes are in place or implemented to mitigate future escalations.
