Land Steward
Description: The Residential Summer Land Steward is a unique experience for nature lovers to live and work outdoors for up to 9 weeks, practice sustainable living, and connect with themselves, others, and nature in a beautiful forest environment.
Camp W has Adirondack shelters, tent sites, primitive campsites, solar panels, trails, indoor and outdoor kitchen areas, fire circles, and organic based vegetable gardens. Stewards camp in their choice of accommodation and may prepare meals outdoors when off site, live in a low-impact way that utilizes few resources, and work collaboratively in a small community.
This position offers a dual experience: to develop hands-on land management and outdoor skills and gain outdoor education and mentoring experience with youth and teens ages 7-17.
- Stewards work on land management projects, including stone work, rock walls, trail work, firewood production, hand weeding, weed-whacking, and practice organic vegetable gardening methods.
- Stewards help to develop the structure of camp through building/construction, COB building, utiilizing natural resources such as the construction of woven fences and other structures of the like.
- Stewards also help plan and lead summer youth programs and are trained in Camp W’s program model, which incorporates hands-on learning with natural resource professionals, games, teambuilding, and stewardship. Stewards mentor campers in week-long wilderness scenarios and play a leadership role in summer events.
Stewards have the opportunity to develop an independent project based on their interests and skills, which contributes to the site in some way. Past projects have included a mobile library, trail map, and a “natural” bench. Stewards will also benefit from a variety of workshops with other staff over the course of the summer, including Forest Health, Carpentry, and Stonework to name a few potentials.
