REPORTS TO: Laboratory ManagerPOSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Histology Technician functions under the supervision and guidance of the Laboratory
Manager and participates in the multidisciplinary process of delivering diagnostic information
to providers. The Lead Histology Technician provides appropriate leadership and assistance in
all areas of the Histology Department. Responsibilities include staff training and competency
assessment, giving input into decision making, managing appropriate staffing levels for the
needs of the workflow and maintenance of histology related LIS items.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees the workflow of the Histology Department staff and assists Laboratory Manager in developing work schedules and defining rotational workflow duties of Histology staff.
- Troubleshoots and assists with the development of new tests under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager and/or Laboratory Director, including identifying capital equipment needs.
- Evaluates and provides input on equipment selection.
- Establishes and implements service priorities, workflow patterns; monitors workflow to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services in the Histology Department.
- Demonstrates the ability to evaluate departmental performance and recommends measures to improve services and quality of current methodologies.
- Assists in maintenance, trouble shooting, and upgrades of LIS.
- Maintain and update histology procedure manuals.
- Correlate work practices to written procedures and present any necessary changes to the Laboratory Manager.
- Assure staff compliance with required instrument maintenance protocols to maximize instrument operation and assure consistent specimen quality outcomes.
- Work with Laboratory Manager to assess staff competency based on lab specific checklists.
- Provide input to the performance evaluations of histology laboratory staff.
- Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination by Pathologist.
- Accessions, grosses, and embeds specimens received.
- Able to perform routine Hematoxylin and Eosin and simple special stains.
- Operates and maintains computerized laboratory equipment.
- Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements and controls are positive.
- Documents laboratory quality assurance and daily quality control.
- Performs and documents all quality controls with corrective actions.
- Answer phone and communicates with providers and staff of complex data.
- Disposes and documents the use of hazardous waste appropriately.
- Organizes laboratory area including general cleaning, upkeep and filing of blocks and slides.
- Follow all safety inspections and ensures laboratory safety standard adherence.
- Other duties as assigned by Laboratory Manager/Laboratory Director.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:- Histologic Technician, H.T. (ASCP)
- More than 5 years of experience in laboratory or equivalent combination of education and experience
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:- Comprehensive knowledge of all histology functions
- Familiar with microtome and other related equipment
- Familiar with special staining techniques
- Use of laboratory computer system and EMR
- Must demonstrate a sense of urgency and function well under demanding conditions.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other health care professionals.
