HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Being an HVAC Mechanic follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Additionally, HVAC Mechanic maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The HVAC Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     Brief Summary of Work for this Position
    The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and repair of all phases of HVAC; refrigeration, condenser, chill water, hot water piping, pumps, and associated controls. The HVAC mechanic will be required to use electronic devices such as computers, tablets, and smart phones.

    *This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow, ice and/or debris removal under the direction of a supervisor.
    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
    High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
    Preferred education, professional skills and experience
    • 5 years of field experience in the mechanical and/or HVAC trades
    • Higher education and/or experience in Facilities Maintenance or graduation from HVAC/Refrigeration trade school
    • Graduated from a Certified HVAC Program
    • Working knowledge of electrical, refrigeration, heating, air conditioning ventilation, pneumatic and electric controls; familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), particularly in Direct Digital Control (DDC); and ability to operate personal computer-based software to check building and equipment functions, identify trends, and generate user programs to accomplish specific requirements
    Required Certifications or licensure
    Employee must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license, or be able to obtain one within two weeks of hiring and must have EPA CFC certification for refrigerant recovery.
