Conducts training in environmental compliance and the handling of hazardous materials. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor/manager. The Industrial Hygienist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     • Provides expertise which often involves moderately complicated to undefined health hazards, such as Hazardous, Toxic, Radioactive Wastes (HTRW) sites, Defense Environmental Restoration Projects (DERP) studies, and other clean-up activities.
    • Conducts comprehensive surveys and evaluations to evaluate health and safety and environmental hazards; and uses knowledge of methods to control a wide variety of health hazards.
    • Coordinates with occupational health professionals performing medical surveillance to provide insight and assist in decision making with regards to requirements of medical evaluation and exams.
    • Manages the Districts Blood-borne Pathogen Program and Exposure Prevention Plan for the prevention of the transmittal of blood-borne diseases.
    • Manages all aspects of the Hearing Conservation Program.
    • Compiles, maintains and updates long-term health monitoring records and base line physical data of District personnel participating in field activities at HTRW sites as part of the health monitoring program.

    • Employee may be required to lift items up to 50 pounds.
    • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
    • This is a Mission Essential position and is not subject to administrative dismissal in emergencies based on inclement weather conditions, or other emergency situations, as appropriate.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.     Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:

    Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

    OR

    Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

    Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

    In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

    For GS-11:
    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying and evaluating conditions which may be hazardous to the health of workers by performing the following: 1) conducting inspections to detect violations of published health standards; 2) performing analysis using standard methods (NIOSH, OSHA) to determine nature and degree of hazards; 3) providing technical assistance such as conducting spot check monitoring visits, participating in public information activities, and investigations of complaints. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

    OR

    Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences or related science.

    OR

    Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

    For GS-12:
    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying and evaluating conditions which may be hazardous to the health of workers by performing the following: 1) conducting inspections to detect violations of published health standards; 2) performing analysis using standard methods (NIOSH, OSHA) to determine nature and degree of hazards; 3) providing technical assistance such as conducting spot check monitoring visits, participating in public information activities, and investigations of complaints; 4) Preparing detailed technical reports of survey findings with recommended corrective actions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-12 level of this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
