Research Director - Farming Systems Trial

  • As the Research Director/ for the Farming Systems Trial (FST), the primary responsibility is to oversee and coordinate both field and laboratory operations associated with the Institute's long-term 43-year-old comparative study between organic and conventional farming systems. With a specialized emphasis on grain cropping systems, the role involves management and strategic direction of all activities within this significant trial and related field and laboratory experiments. In addition to the hands-on management of field experiments and rigorous laboratory analyses, the Research Director holds a role in interpreting and presenting data and insights derived from the FST to a regional, national, and international audience. It is also expected that this position will work closely with the Communication, Education and Consulting departments to facilitate knowledge transfer to current and future farmers, stakeholders, and policymakers.  Furthermore, the Research Director of FST will develop collaborations and partnerships with the scientific community to advance sound science related to regenerative organic agriculture. This position reports to Rodale Institute's Director of Research.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Responsible for coordinating day-to-day operations of FST and related trials with research and farm operations staff.
    • Analyze and interpret scientific data.
    • Write and manage grants with internal and external partners to advance our understanding of regenerative organic agricultural systems.
    • Oversee the timely execution of grant funded projects, including budget management, timeline management, data organization, and instructing field and lab technicians.
    • Supervise technicians, postdocs and interns.
    • Develop collaborative and productive relationships with internal and external partners.
    • Clearly communicate to the general public and scientific community through written and oral communication (e.g. workshops, conference presentations, field days).  
    • Write bulletins, fact sheets, articles, and other outreach and education communications.
    • Publish peer reviewed articles in professional journals.
    • Support the Rodale Institute education and consultancy programs with expertise in field crop management.
    • Clearly communicate and work with the FST advisory committee.  

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
    • PhD in Agronomy/Plant Breeding/Horticulture/ Soil Science or other relevant fields.
    • Minimum of 5 (five) years in field and laboratory research experience and familiarity with field row crop production.
    • Proven interest/background in organic and/or regenerative production practices
    • Strong background in statistical analysis of field trial results and demonstrated evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
    • History of grant solicitation
    • Interest and ability in working, collaborating, and communicating in a team environment with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
    • Self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple activities.
    • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated written and oral skills for communicating technical information to farmers and extension personnel.
    • Familiarity and experience with field scale equipment and field crop production.


    Travel: Some regional, national and international travel is required.

    Appointments: Research (70%), Education (10%) & Outreach/extension/consultancy (20%)
