Instructor - Chemistry teaches courses in the discipline area of chemistry. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Chemistry provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Chemistry typically reports to a department head. Chemistry, General Science, Physics & Engineering Instructor (Adjunct Faculty Pool)

  • This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching part-time in the Science department. The pool will remain open until June 2024 unless positions are no longer needed. Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be contacted and interviewed as positions become available.


    Instructor is responsible for the planning and implementation of various Science (chemistry and general science) courses. Instructor is required to create a course syllabus, instruct students in the subject matter in accordance with that syllabus, maintain attendance records, assess student progress and evaluate course work for a letter grade. Instructor will maintain college standards in all aspects of professionalism, record keeping and instruction within the team atmosphere of the science department of Rogue Community College.

    Supervision Received
    The dean, in consultation with the department chair is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president. The dean confers with the department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.

    Supervision Exercised
    The instructor is responsible for carrying out all duties required to supervise students in lecture or lab. This includes classroom control, maintaining a safe environment, insuring proper care and use of equipment, and classroom discipline.
    1. Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate during the day, evening, or weekend.
    2. Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
    3. Develops, communicates, and utilizes a student assessment process and instruments which are related to the stated objectives of the course.
    4. Adapt learning procedures to the online/distance learning environment, including telecourse and web-based delivery, ensuring comparable quality of instruction, student-teacher interaction, and assessment with classroom-based courses.
    5. May participate as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
    6. Communicate effectively with a wide variety of students and college staff.
    7. Responsible for departmental equipment and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department.
    8. Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed.
    9. Organize the learning experience for the maximum benefit of traditional and non-traditional learners.
    10. Advise students on matters of program goals and course requirements.
    11. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education: A Master's degree in chemistry, general science, biochemistry, physics or related field is required for lecture. A Bachelor's degree biochemistry, chemistry general science, physics or related field is required for labs.

     Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

    Experience: Experience teaching at a high school or college level is desirable but not required.

    Knowledge of: Sufficient knowledge of the subject area taught; computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, multi-media presentations, and spreadsheets; curriculum development; the community colleges' mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs.

    Ability to: Communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new technologies such as online instruction; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Pass a criminal background check.

    Licenses: If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.
     

    Physical DemandsManual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%) which is spent in a classroom operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and other standard office equipment or in a lab environment using standard science equipment and tools. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials less than 5 pounds daily, 5-25 pounds occasionally, and 25-60 pounds occasionally. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.
     
    Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.     While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/classroom environment, with occasional outside lab and/or field trips, and is exposed to chemicals, fumes, and dirt; potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Where appropriate, personal protective equipment will be issued and the employee will be trained in its proper application and use. Lighting is adequate.
    This is an Adjunct Faculty pool for teaching part-time in the Science department. The application documents required include a cover letter, resume and unofficial transcripts indicating the level of degree earned. Compensation is based on the Rogue Community College 23-24 Adjunct Faculty Salary Schedule. Candidates will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree(s) upon hire. 

    This pool will remain open until June 2024 unless positions are no longer needed.
