    Assessment Specialist

    The Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support’s Student Success Unit is seeking candidates for the Assessment Specialist position who enjoy team-oriented, collaborative, and fast-paced work environments requiring organization, problem solving, and experience analyzing, interpreting, and reporting both quantitative and qualitative data. The Student Success Unit is comprised of five departments: the Career Center, Student Success Center, Carolina Experience, University 101 Programs, and the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition. The Assessment Specialist is part of a three-person, centralized assessment and data analytics team supporting each of the departments within the unit.
    The Assessment Specialist’s primary duties include:
    • Managing University 101 Programs’ course evaluation process and the administration of the department’s program and curricular assessment projects.
    • Assisting all departments within the unit with the analysis and reporting of course- and program-related data.
    • Assisting with the creation and maintenance of departmental Tableau dashboards

    Minimum Qualifications
    A bachelor’s degree and three or more years of related experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    A master’s degree and three or more years of experience working with higher education student data and data systems. Experience using Excel, SPSS, and Tableau or other data visualization software. At least two years of experience teaching UNIV 101 or another extended orientation first-year seminar.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
    Ability to analyze and interpret both quantitative and qualitative data using various statistical and mathematical techniques. Comprehensive knowledge of data collection, data analysis, and presentation of information. Comprehensive familiarity with applicable computer software products (SPSS, Excel, Tableau, etc.). Effective presentation and reporting skills. Ability to resolve problems and communicate outcomes. Ability to interpret plans and interact with various levels of personnel. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to use technology, problem solve, and utilize conscious decision making. Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced work environment.

    Manage course and program assessment projects for University 101 Programs to support continuous improvement efforts. Assess student learning in UNIV 101 and instructor approaches to the UNIV 101 curriculum. Conduct interviews and lead focus groups with instructors and current and former students to further investigate successful approaches to the course and identify innovative and effective approaches to meeting course learning outcomes. Assemble a Student Advisory Council composed of current UNIV 101 students in the fall to collect timely feedback about the course from a student perspective. Conduct departmental surveys, such as the UNIV 101 Former Student Survey. Prepare First-Year Retention Survey section-specific reports for UNIV 101 instructors.

    Manage University 101 Programs’ course evaluation process for approximately 350 sections of UNIV courses annually to ensure compliance with university policy ACAF 1.04 and promote access to data for continual course improvement. This duty includes developing survey questions as needed; creating and administering surveys through the university’s Class Climate course evaluation system; monitoring response rates; managing instructor and student reminders and other related communications; working with Class Climate contacts to troubleshoot problems; generating and disseminating course evaluation reports to instructors; and updating longitudinal data reports.

Interpret and present data to unit and departmental colleagues for discussion and decision making and make recommendations for programmatic improvements. Assist the unit’s Assessment Data Analyst with the creation and maintenance of departmental Tableau dashboards, as needed.
