    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Educational Instructor will design and implement age and developmentally appropriate educational curriculum in one or more academic, technical, or vocational subjects (including ESL and physical education). Services are provided to unaccompanied children and youth ages 0-17 residing a 24-hour shelter funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Curricula will combine best practices in proven pedagogy models for unaccompanied children. Educational Instructor will ensure that services follow national standards of education while adhering to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and ORR requirements to provide a unique experience for children and youth. The Educational Instructor must be culturally responsive to the academic needs of each youth. Daily instruction must be provided in a nurturing, productive learning environment that will allow students to thrive. Must strictly enforce and adhere to ORR’s Zero Tolerance Policy regarding abuse and neglect and all relevant ORR policies and procedures always ensuring the safety of the children and youth.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Plans and develops an engaging, age/developmentally appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and national academic standards.
    • Designs and delivers individual lesson plans in one or more academic, technical, or vocational subjects (science, social studies, math, language arts, physical education, technology, ESL, etc.). Using a variety of teaching techniques that will appeal to various learning styles.
    • Prepares materials for lessons and assignments. Monitors student progress, evaluates, and grades student performance. Academic progress may be evaluated using written response (ex: standard question and answer written test), observing student’s performance (ex: hands-on performance such as playing an instrument, playing a teaching video game, and showing proficiency in the content), and/or personal communication (ex: oral examinations or asking questions during regular interaction of a youth).
    • Discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students and designated departmental staff (case manager, clinician, program director or designee) as they arise.
    • Completes and timely submit individualized academic plans of service for youth.
    • Builds and maintains positive relationships with students, other teaching staff and program staff to ensure the proper supervision and safety of the youth.
    • Completes comprehensive Incident Reports (IRs). IRs must capture a youth’s behavior prior to an incident, what lead up to the incident, all circumstances of the incident observed/heard, interventions made during and after the incident, contacts made and resolutions.
    • Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, gradebooks, and other necessary records.
    • Adheres to staff to child ratios (1:8) in the classroom and will also monitor halls, community areas, playgrounds, and lunchrooms with other teaching and program staff as needed, ensuring ratios are adhered to. May need to take meals with children and youth to maintain ratio.
    • Participates in required training, conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars that will enhance skills.
    • Attends Treatment Team Meetings, departmental meetings and program meetings as needed.
    • Assists in the timely completion of Diagnostic Academic Assessments as needed. Assessments must be completed with 72 hours of youth entering the shelter.
    • Assists in completing Exit Letters for youth as needed. Exit letter will provide receiving school and child’s sponsor on the student’s academic progress which includes formative assessments, diagnostic scores pre/post and summary of grades for science, social studies, math, reading writing, physical education, and English as a Second Language.
    • Provides bi-monthly safety courses/lesson plans to children and youth to include Fire Safety and Drills, Procedures for any onsite emergencies.
    • Facilitates education for children and youth on Sexual abuse and sexual harassment, Grievance Policy, Child Rights, and Review UC Handbook for questions and feedback as needed.
    • Completes daily progress reports on children’s behavior and any incidents in the classroom within required timeframes.
    • Required to arrive at the shelter on time, review/receive any updates or changes in procedures or supervision of youth, and always arrive prepared to work on a regular and consistent basis.
    • Reports headcounts and the movement of the children on an ongoing basis and communicate on a regular basis with YCP Department Supervisor as needed.
    • Ensures that there are no safety hazards for youth whether indoors or outdoors and must react proactively to prevent immediate harm to youth or other staff.
    • Coordinates with other departments to ensure youth are provided with critical services such as case management, legal services, clinical, and appropriate medical care.
    • Ensures adherence to MDHHS and federal/ORR requirements for the daily overall care of children.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by Lead Teacher or Chief Administrator or designee.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or in other related fields. Teaching Certification with 2 years of experience working in a classroom setting with children and/or 1 year experience working with children and youth teaching English as a Second Language. May include Internship or Volunteer positions held.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
    • The ability to type and use a tablet/iPad, laptop, or desktop is needed to complete daily tasks.
    • Able to work cooperatively with multiple members of a Team including program staff, state licensing personnel, ORR/Federal Field Staff, and other office personnel.
    • Well organized and highly motivated.
    • You must be 21 years of age or older to work directly with youth.
    • Must maintain any licensures/certifications during employment and/or obtain within required timeframes, if approved.
    • Clear MVR Check.
    • Clear criminal background check. Including a national criminal fingerprint background check.
    • Clear drug testing results.
    • Clear Tuberculosis results.
    • In adherence with federal or state contract requirements (as applicable): Proof of COVID Vaccinations and other immunizations (i.e., varicella, measles, mumps, tetanus, Tdap, rubella, Flu, Hepatitis A and B).

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $48,000.00 - $53,000.00 per year
