PURPOSE:
To establish English language proficiency for English Learners in grades K through 12. English as a Second Language skills include but are not limited to direct teaching, as well as consultation and collaboration with regular teaching staff, parents, administration, and outside support agencies (i.e. LIU, translation services, immigration services, etc.)
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan for and carry out instruction to address the identified needs of English Learners in grades K through 12 requiring language assistance due to limited English proficiency.
- Coordinate, collaborate, assess, train and assist the staff in meeting the specific instructional needs of English Learners who struggle in regular classroom programs.
- Assess initial and ongoing individual student needs for those students identified as English Learners.
- Monitor the progress of each assigned student and apply appropriate teaching techniques aimed at maximizing learning.
- Maintain a safe environment, which is conducive to learning. Factors that detract from the environment should be reported to the appropriate staff.
- Report individual student’s progress in a fair and consistent manner.
- Schedule and participate in meetings with parents, teachers, and administrators as necessary to support student progress.
- Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service activities and pertinent training.
- Participate in District curriculum development.
- Maintain professionalism at all times when in contact with the public.
- Utilize available district support services.
- Follow all District policies and procedures regarding the education of English Language Learners.
- Complete all required paperwork in a timely manner.
- Travel between schools, as required.
- Assist with the needs of at-risk students (as appropriate to each specific level: elementary, middle, secondary) under the direction of the building administration
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate
- PA ESL Certification applicable to this position or obligation to complete all Pennsylvania ESL Training components.
- Valid PA driver’s license

- Demonstrates knowledge of basic academic skills (reading, math, writing, spelling, and appropriate language usage).
- Adheres to specific rules and regulations as they apply to the discipline procedures of the building.
- Receipt of current, favorable clearances including: Pennsylvania State Criminal History (Act 34), Federal Criminal History (FBI – Fingerprinting - Act 114), Pennsylvania Child Abuse (Act 151), and Sexual Misconduct and Abuse Disclosures (Act 168).
