  • Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a part time STEM Instructor to join our STEM department. This individual will play an essential role in growing our K-12 STEM programming, with a focus on upper elementary and middle school students. The primary responsibility of this individual will be to independently- and/or team-teach a premade STEM lesson or series of lessons ranging from 1 to 2 hours primarily for K-12 students. A majority of students in STEM Center programs range from 3rd – 8th grade. 

    In most STEM Center programs, there is a lead instructor paired with a second instructor to support student learning. For smaller groups, depending on the content, instructors may be independently managing a classroom. Candidates with a desire to develop or improve existing lessons are welcome to apply, however, the primary duties of this role will be instructional in nature.

    All courses run at the We Energies STEM Center at MSOE. It is intended this position will teach a minimum of two classes per week, with each class lasting roughly 2.5-3 hours including set-up and tear-down time. The Director of STEM will work with the selected candidate to pick a mutually beneficial schedule; programs will always run on weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and a majority of programs run between 9:30 a.m. and noon. This role will teach from mid-September through mid-May. Additional hours and teaching opportunities may be available, but not required, depending on STEM Center need and candidate availability.

    Essential Job Functions
    • Provide instruction, independently or in a team, to groups of up to 40 students for 1.5 - 2 hours at a time
    • Teach premade lessons in engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence or similar STEM topics
    • Differentiate content, as needed, based on the needs of participants
    • Prepare the classroom for groups including setting up equipment and rearranging the classroom space, as needed
    • Provide feedback to STEM Program Coordinators and Director of STEM on content, as necessary
    • Administer pre and post surveys or knowledge checks to students for select programs
    • Attend in-house training, as required, to learn curriculum
    This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

    Qualifications
    • A bachelor’s degree in education or a STEM field is preferred
    • Experience with or a willingness to learn basic engineering design software, Fab Maker Studio
    • Experience with or a willingness to learn fabrication tools, specifically Silhouette printers and GlowForge
    • Experience with or a willingness to learn STEM instructional tools including, but not limited to: LEGO Spike or Inventor robots, microbits, Makey Makey, Scratch, cutebots, artificial intelligence lens kits, Neuromaker AI hands, fluid power kits, and the engineering design process
    • Demonstrated experience teaching K-12 students in a classroom or similar environment in STEM is strongly preferred
    • Requires flexibility in working hours between 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on weekdays between September and May
    • Excellent communication, problem-solving and presentation skills
    • Dependable and able to work with a variable work schedule
    • Proficient with e-mail, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and function as a team player
    • Must enjoy working with people, especially K-12 students
    • Bilingual (English & Spanish) is a plus, but not required
    Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as course curriculum and product manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate, in English, in both written and oral form.
    • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
    • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.
    Physical Demands
    Must be able to lift items up to 25 pounds. Must be able to push, pull, and move wheeled furniture around a designated classroom area
    Individual will need to be actively moving for 2 to 3 hour windows while instructing and setting up classroom.

    Work Environment
    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
