    The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Computer Science Instructor with emphasis on developing and supporting diverse programs ranging from core Computer Science transfer courses to vocational curricula related to Cloud Computing, Data Science and Analytics, Machine Learning, and other emerging technologies. The assignment begins at Los Angeles City College (LACC) in Fall of 2023.

    Founded in 1929, LACC is the oldest of the nine colleges that make up the LACCD, the world’s largest community college district. The campus is in the heart of Los Angeles, minutes from Hollywood and Downtown, and conveniently adjacent to major freeway arteries and public transportation, including the MTA and Metro. LACC is culturally rich, with one of the most ethnically, ideologically and age-diverse student bodies in the country. It is this diversity that drives LACC’s long tradition of innovation and responsiveness to the changing needs of the times and its more than 17,000 students. Our programs range from serving traditional transfer students to career training, adult career advancement, cultural integration, and personal enrichment.     A main responsibility of the position is teaching a wide-range of Computer Science classes as assigned by the department. These classes may include, among others, courses related Data Structures, Computer Architecture & Organization, Programming Languages, Data Science & Analytics, and Cloud Computing. Specific courses will be assigned based on department need and according to the experience and expertise of the candidate and may include dual enrollment courses taught at high schools and middle schools, teaching at off-site locations, evening, and weekend courses, face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.

    In addition to teaching, the position expects faculty to maintain high standards related to student academic achievement, compliance with intercollegiate rules, regulations, and policies; good written and verbal communication skills, and campus and community relations that reflect the mission and values of the college and demonstrates the ethics and integrity of the department.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s degree in computer science or computer engineering; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND Master’s in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting, or engineering; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering AND Master’s in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics AND Master’s degree in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s in information science, computer information systems, or information systems; OR the equivalent.
  • A sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Faculty members at LACC are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students. The successful applicant will be required to fulfill a 30-hour-a-week assignment as specified by the current Labor Contract; the assignment is divided between teaching and departmental duties. Opportunities exist for summer and winter intersession teaching. In addition to the regular weekly teaching load, duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following.

    1. Teach a full range of Computer Science and Computer Information Systems courses equivalent to 30 units over an academic year in accordance with established course outlines. For the 10 month academic year, this translates to 15 teaching hours per semester.

    2. Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact (5.5 per week).

    3. Devote a minimum of five hours weekly to campus responsibilities (senate, curriculum, department events, etc.).

    4. Assess student performance and maintain accurate student records. Submit feedback, rosters, and grades in a timely fashion.

    5. Advise, assist and mentor students to promote student success.

    6. Facilitate student achievement of certificates by assisting the department to advise, guide and inform students of options and procedures.

    7. Develops student learning outcomes; conduct evaluation of student learning outcomes, participate in the program review process; and participate in activities related to maintain accreditation standards of the department and college.

    8. Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.

    9. Develop and update department course curricula, including developing hybrid and/or online courses.

    10. Contribute to program growth and enrollment, and support student success and retention.

    11. Provide leadership in creating new curriculum that emulates on-the-job production and post-production proficiency.

    12. Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology, to teach students in a multicultural environment.

    13. Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.

    14. Assess the need for equipment and educational materials, and formulate and submit appropriate purchase requests.

    15. Actively recruit business advisors for our advisory committee and participate in periodic advisory committee meetings that provide input to align programs and pathways with industry needs.

    16. Develop a student recruitment plan and promote awareness of LACC classes at local high and middle schools. Participate in Outreach events and department tours.

    17. Develop community partnerships and other collaborative relationships with business, industry, colleges, universities, and other entities as appropriate.

    18. Participate and actively contribute to departmental meetings.

    19. Participate and actively contribute to college committees.

    20. Maintain professional and ethical academic standards.

    21. Assist in grant writing activities such as the Strong Workforce Program (SWP) and Perkins grant awards.

    22. Maintain a commitment to the mission of the community college and its philosophy of education.

    23. Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson.


    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT COVID 19 VACCINATION:

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.


    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master or Doctorate degree in Computer Science.
    • Experience teaching students in a relevant discipline at a Community College or University level.
    • Experience using learning management systems and remote teaching tools such as Canvas and Zoom.
    • Professional work or teaching experience relating to emerging technologies such as Data Analytics, Machine Learning, and Cloud Computing.
    • Ability to work effectively in promoting our programs to the students, community, local high schools, and the industry.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and work collegially and collaboratively within the department and the college.
    Experience working with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles.
    • Strong understanding and experience implementing culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx and historically underrepresented and underserved populations.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS:

    The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,180 per academic year. The District provides an excellent benefit package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance for the employee and eligible dependents.
