Instructor - Music teaches courses in the discipline area of music. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Music provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Music typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research.   • Position Philosophy: The theme wall statement embodies the Andrews Academy philosophy: “To restore in man the image of his maker is the object of education.” This must also be the primary focus in each aspect of the schools’ music programs. The music teacher – choral emphasis will, among other things, provide leadership for the voice and choral programs at Andrews Academy and Ruth Murdoch Elementary School.

    Duties and responsibilities



    • Provide a personal example of a rich and mature spiritual life

    • Ensure that the educational environment at Andrews Academy is spiritually-focused and in concert with Adventist beliefs

    • Intentionally integrate faith with learning

    • Inspire, and develop appropriate and caring relationships with, students

    • Seek creative and innovate ways to encourage and support student-led music ministry

    • Teach assigned courses

    • Lead and conduct the Silhouettes, a select choir

    • Lead and conduct the Andrews Academy Chorale

    • Lead and conduct the RMES Select Choir

    • Lead and conduct the RMES Choir

    • Lead and conduct other ensembles as assigned (e.g., strings, orchestra, handbells)

    • Organize and lead public performances and tours

    • Intentionally schedule performances for area churches and churches in the Lake Union yearly

    • Meet the various responsiblities in a manner consistent with the board-approved budget

    • Attend faculty meetings

    • Supervise graduate students

    • Cultivate friends and supporters of the schools’ music programs

    • Regularly consult and collaborate with the Andrews University Department of Music

    • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Andrews Academy or Ruth Murdoch Elementary School principals (if a conflict emerges due to responsibilities assigned by the principals, the principals need to dialogue with each other and resolve the conflict)

    Supervisory responsibilities

    Must be comfortable interacting with students, parents and colleagues and be able to respond with poise under stress. Must have a warm and friendly personality. Must be willing to train, mentor and supervise students, and also interact on a professional level with faculty and staff. Must be a team player and fit comfortably with the office atmosphere and philosophy of advocacy.

    Technical competencies

    Using computer and related music software, etc.

    Like all teachers, music educators are well-served by patience, enthusiasm, and dedication. Those who work with serious young musicians should possess great discipline and a drive for excellence in order to inspire the same in their students. Organizational skills are necessary for creating effective lesson plans as are communication skills for getting them across.
