Nursing Simulation & Clinical Instructor

  • The Nursing Simulation & Clinical Instructor is a faculty position that works within the Nursing department.  Responsibilities are focused on the development of simulation scenarios, including integration into curricula and training for Nurse Educators; clinical instruction of students, including skills lab training. 
     
    Supervision Received
    The Dean of Instruction, Health & Public Service is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of Nursing instructors. The Director confers with the Dean, the OSBN-designated Nursing Administrator and/or department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.
    1. Instructs students using simulation scenarios, including pre-and post-simulation.  Responsible for moulage set-up, removal, as well as technical support as needed during course delivery.
    2. Partners directly with department faculty in the process of student learning, assessment and performance by providing feedback through debriefing sessions.
    3. Participates in assessment of student learning at the course, program, and institutional levels. 
    4. Participates in comprehensive program reviews, to include regular and systemic curriculum and program assessment to be used for continuous program and curricular improvement.
    5. Identifies, arranges, and manages supplies required for each human patient simulation clinical experience.
    6. Provides technological orientation and assists with training of medical equipment usage (e.g., ventilators, IV pump, feeding pump, etc.) for incoming students.
    7. Aligns and supports the Nursing curriculum to support clinical time by students via simulation, using high- and mid-fidelity simulation, and other simulation technologies (e.g., virtual simulation). Creates and modifies patient simulation scenarios or case studies that are evidence-based to meet learning objectives set by the RCC programs’ curricula. Works with other faculty to thread the appropriate simulations throughout the various curricula. Provide the leadership required to ensure that simulation programs meet standards of quality assurance for breadth and depth of education, and user expectations.
    8. Oversees the implementation of lab rules and procedures (as required).
    9. Develop working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff and students within the institution as well as with partner simulation centers and educational organizations.
    10. Provides a positive role model for the students, especially in the areas of caring, advocacy, respect for self and others, collegiality, ethical behavior, ethical reasoning, and strong work ethic (including responsibility, dependability, and accountability) and provides constructive feedback to students.
    11. Provides direct supervision and evaluation of students as they perform in lab or deliver patient care in clinical facility for up to 7-8 hours per day (as needed). 
      1. Facilitates students' adjustment to clinical facility.
      2. Facilitates student’s access to medical record-keeping system used in clinical facility.
      3. Provides the staff of the clinical facilities with copies of program goals, student learning objectives, and clinical schedules.
      4. Provides professional clinical support through pre- and post-conferences
      5. Acts as liaison between clinical facility staff and students.
      6. Provides individual performance review and recommendations to students as needed; completes weekly evaluation on each student in clinical setting, and formally discusses and documents evaluations with students at least twice per quarter.
      7. Arrives to class and/or at assigned clinical sites prepared and on time and during clinical remains in the assigned facility at all times when students are performing direct patient care, except for integrative practicum or other specialty/observational experiences assigned by program director. Position may require supervision of students on night and weekend shifts as well as day shifts.
    12. Participates as a team member in department meetings, planning activities, and departmental recruitment and outreach efforts.
    13. Participates in ongoing professional development and networking opportunities related to simulation education expertise.
    14. Engages in simulation research activities including participation in study implementation and data collection, data analysis, and grant writing and report writing for the purpose of simulation-based research, accreditation, or self-studies.
    15. Represents the program and the College to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner. 
    16. Participates in the recruitment, hiring, and mentoring of adjunct faculty.
    17. Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned.
    18. Participates in the full range of professional and college-related activities, including student advising, programmatic assessment, ongoing professional development, departmental and college-wide meetings, committee activity, and community involvement.
    19. Performs other duties as assigned.
    Specific Functions
    Serves as the department’s simulation expert by:
    1. Designing and implementing a bank of simulations for every class in the Nursing programs, including assessment of simulation scenarios for continuous improvement. Develops and implements evidence-based simulation scenarios that expand student diagnostic and critical thinking skills through human patient simulators, virtual reality, and other mid to high fidelity clinical simulations.
    2. Training RCC faculty on simulation best practices and the use of developed scenarios.
    3. Serving as a training resource for partner hospitals by providing continuing education to hospital nurses, clinical faculty, and preceptors.
    EducationA bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing is required. A master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.
     
    Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
     
    Experience: Current unencumbered licensure in State of Oregon as a Registered Nurse; preferred experience with nursing simulation or simulator training; a certification in Healthcare Simulation preferred. Candidate must meet requirements of a Nurse Educator Associate from OSBN: Each Nurse Educator Associate must hold at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing with the equivalent of a minimum of two years of full-time patient care experience at the registered nurse level.

    Knowledge of: College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures. Possess expert knowledge on usage and operation of medical equipment/supplies. Knowledge in the usage and operation of multimedia equipment and computers. Knowledge of OSHA, OCNE, ACHA, INACSL standards, and HIPPA guidelines.
     
    Ability to: Communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; work collaboratively as a member of an academic department; demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject areas; participate in curriculum and program development; participate in the student advising program and college-wide efforts to improve student retention and success; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new technologies; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth.
     
    Instruct student, faculty and staff on how to perform clinical skills, if needed ability to troubleshoot human patient simulator and/or medical equipment and follow manufacturers’ operational instructions. Constructively guide and train staff on the usage of human patient simulators.   Utilize healthcare background to adapt clinical scenarios on manikins on demand. Work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
     
    Pass a criminal background check, urine drug screen and provide proof of required immunizations and CPR as required by state law for healthcare programs.
     
    Licenses: For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
     
    Physical Demands of Position: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. May also be required to sit for long periods of time in meetings or traveling between counties.
     
    Working conditions: Usual office and lab working conditions. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office and lab environments with potentially loud equipment, telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.This is a Full-Time Faculty position (100%, 10 months/year) in the Nursing Department. Starting compensation will be in accordance with initial step placement per the current Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and the 2023-24 Full-Time Faculty salary schedule. Consideration will be given to experience and educational achievement.   

    Position is grant/contract status through 6/30/24, renewed annually, with continuation dependent upon funding. Grant funding is expected to continue through 6/30/26. Grant/contract status positions do not accrue seniority.
