Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Sociology typically reports to a department head.     The Social Science department housed in the Social Science, Business, and Human Services (SSBHS) division at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) is seeking a Part-Time Adjunct Sociology Instructor.     SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). Serving about 6,000 students, SFCC endeavors to be an educational leader and a responsive partner with the community and region, offering access to relevant programs of the highest quality. We offer a large liberal arts/transfer program (approximately 75% of total enrollment) as well as state-of-the-art professional technical programs (about 25%). In addition to serving the urban and suburban population in greater Spokane, CCS provides educational services to rural communities throughout a 12,302 square mile region in Eastern Washington. This region includes all of Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry, and Pend Oreille Counties as well as portions of Lincoln County.

    SFCC seeks qualified candidates for consideration of employment in this adjunct (part-time) position. Classes will be taught in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Prepares for and instructs lower-division sociology courses online, on-ground, or in other flexible modalities 
    • Provides availability and accessibility to students for the purpose of academic consulting and support, in a manner appropriate to meet students’ needs, through a combination of office hours, email accessibility, or other effective means of responsive and timely communication
    • Communicates expectations and establishes clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback.
    • Demonstrates commitment to advancing diversity, promoting equity, and preparing students to live responsibly in an increasingly global civilization.
    • Demonstrates commitment to serving a socially and culturally diverse student population.
    • Complies with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, student financial aid requirements, safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
    • Models professional decorum and mutual respect in personal interactions
    • Complies with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements
    • Supports and advances the CCS strategic plan and perform other duties as assigned

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
     
    • An earned Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution with 25 graduate credits in sociology (minimum of one theory course required).
    • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
    • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.
    • Demonstrated competence in working with diverse student populations and an appreciation for diverse voices in the classroom. 
    • Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and the community/technical college system.

    PREFERRED COMPETENCIES

    • PhD in Sociology from an accredited institution.
    • Additional experience in teaching a variety of teaching modalities, specifically hybrid/blended classes.
    • Prior community college teaching experience.



    Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment.     TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.
