BASIC FUNCTION
The Paraoptometric Technician assists the Optometrist by conducting diagnostic and preliminary tests, recording exam findings, testing eye function, preparing examination rooms, cleaning and arranging equipment, and instructing patients in inserting and caring for contact lenses.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Acquire medical history and chief complaint of patient, prepare patient chart, and ensure confidentiality of all records.
- Perform preliminary and special testing for Optometrist.
- Prepare patient for an eye examination.
- Administrative jobs may include documenting case history, filing, and maintaining records.
- Clinical jobs may include testing patient for depth and color perception, acuity for either near and far, autorefraction, Intraocular pressure (IOP), blood pressure, and visual field testing protocol updated regularly.
- Educate the patient with proper eye care
- Responsible for cleaning instruments, maintaining and controlling inventory.
- Responsible for filing and updating patient records, greeting patients
- Maintain a clean examination room and keep clinical equipment clean and organized.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, iPad, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- This position is performed in an office environment and requires periods of sitting or standing that may last one hour or longer, and should require approximately 50% sitting, 10% standing, and 40% walking.
- Physical requirements may include the need to occasionally lift up to ten pounds.
- Job pressures are high for meeting deadlines, working on multiple tasks at one time, and frequent interruptions.
- Occupational requirements for this position include the ability to see, hear, and speak clearly and distinctly.
- The mental ability required is high for reasoning, reading, remembering, writing, and speaking.
- This position requires the ability to work extended or unusual hours to meet the occasional needs of the practice or in an emergency situation.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- The ability to use and maintain a manual and automatic lensometer, autorefractor, phoropter, auto and manual keratometer, tonopen, visual fields, Optical Coherence Tomography, Topographer, color vision plates, stereo vision test, and personal computers.
- Extremely efficient, organized and resourceful; must also be flexible and able to function well in a fast-paced environment with great interpersonal skills to deal with many personalities.
- Strong decision making skills.
- Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members. .
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
Prior experience in an optical or medical office support position desired, but not necessary. Prefer experience with Eyefinity software and Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
Specific skills preferred include:
· Knowledge of business office procedures.
· Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
· Completion of a basic paraoptometric course, equivalent paraoptometric training, or paraoptometric certification.
*** Note: A set schedule will be made later, but potential hours: Monday / Wednesday 9:00am-7:00pm (Usually, only one late night), Tuesday / Thursday 7:30am – 05:00pm, Friday 07:30am – 04:30pm, and Saturday 07:30am – Noon (Every other) ***
