Medical Instrument Technician

  • Duties

    • Monitors telemetry and hardwire electrocardiogram (ECG) tracings, oxygen saturation, central venous pressures, and arterial pressure wave forms and values.
    • Differentiate relative significance of various abnormal conditions and takes appropriate action.
    • Document and interpret monitor strips of actual waveform, values, and corrective action taken in patients records.
    • Assist with nursing care activities and procedures.
    • Provide a minimum of one in-service involving cardiac monitoring on an annual basis.

    • This position requires rotating shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
    • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
    • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
    • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
    • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
    • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
    • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
    • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
    • This position has a requirement to lift up to 20 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
    • This position has been designated "Inclement Weather Essential". The incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
    • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.

    Qualifications

    In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing patient care in an inpatient Medical/Telemetry Unit; operating or maintaining telemetry and electrocardiogram equipment (ECG). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

    Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with a major field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as nursing, OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in courses such as biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, medical technology, or physics. Of the 24 semester hours, at least 12 must have been in a field directly related to the specialization of the position as identified in (a).

    Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
