  • Duties

    Echocardiography Technicians at this level functions proficiently in all aspects of the Echo Cardiology Laboratory. They identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury or other medically significant condition from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler. They incorporate causes and results of a variety of symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination.

    The Echocardiography Technician has the intimate knowledge of thoracic anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function. They are responsible for adhering to all departmental, service, hospital, agency, and national regulations and policies.

    The Echocardiography Technician must possess the ability to organize and manage time effectively, exercise independent judgment, assume responsibility for their own work/actions, and sometimes work under stressful conditions, remain focused, maintain the ability to prioritize and transition between tasks quickly. They must possess ethical judgment, integrity, honesty, dependability and accountability. Technician must be reliable and able to work independently. The technician is responsible for performing job functions in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of VA EKHCS. The technician working at this level must assume the functions and responsibilities of lower grade levels

    Relationships with management, co-workers, patients, and the general public is consistently courteous, respectful, and cooperative in nature. Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's mission and goals. Incumbent will demonstrate VA's ICARE values as well as the expectations documented in the Employee Code of Conduct HSPM

    The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient. Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients

    The incumbent is responsible for the quality and technical accuracy of work performed. The employee, having developed expertise in the area of work assigned is responsible for the planning and carrying out the assignment, resolving any possible conflicts that may arise and selecting the approach used in solving the problem. Completed work is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work, or effectiveness in meeting requirements or achieving expected results. Supervisor relies on incumbent to take independent and original action in solving problems as they arise

    Ability to complete diagnostic studies ordered by and in collaboration with physician on all tours of duty with minimal or no direct supervision; coordinates appointments/ workload per appropriateness of patients/staffing. Ability to prep, apply electrodes and assist providers throughout treadmill and nuclear stress testing procedures.

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this grade level.
    • Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
    • English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
    May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

    Grade Determinations GS-9:
    In addition to the core competencies at the GS-8 level, you must also meet the following:
    Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
    Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
    1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques such as SAECG, ETT, Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to develop analysis interpretation formats, and to receive inquiries concerning results.
    • 2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
    3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

    Physical Requirements: While performing duties of this job the Cardiac Catheterization Technician is frequently required to stand walk, bend and reach. May require long periods of standing and wearing of lead apron, gloves, mask, and gown and eye shields during diagnostic procedures. Must be able to lift and/or move over 50 pounds. They must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens.
