Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to join our team. The Peer Support Specialist will provide invaluable support and guidance to adults with disabilities, both within a center-based environment and out in the community. Responsibilities:
- Peer Support Services:
- Provide peer support to adults with disabilities in a center-based setting, offering encouragement, empathy, and practical assistance.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where individuals feel valued and respected.
- Utilize personal experience to relate to participants, sharing coping strategies and success stories.
- Offer emotional support and active listening to individuals facing challenges related to their disabilities.
- Community Outreach:
- Engage with program participants in community settings, promoting socialization and community integration.
- Organize and accompany participants to recreational activities, appointments, and community events.
- Advocate for accessibility and accommodation in community settings to ensure full participation for individuals with disabilities.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and resources to enhance support services.
- Group Facilitation:
- Plan and facilitate group activities and workshops that promote skill-building, peer connections, and personal development.
- Lead discussions on topics relevant to participants' interests and needs, such as self-advocacy, independent living skills, and health management.
- Encourage participation and collaboration among group members to create a supportive community environment.
- Individualized Support:
- Conduct individualized assessments to identify strengths, needs, and goals of participants.
- Develop personalized support plans in collaboration with participants, focusing on skill development, goal setting, and self-advocacy.
- Provide ongoing coaching and encouragement to help individuals overcome barriers and achieve their objectives.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of participant interactions, progress, and outcomes.
- Prepare written reports and documentation as required by program guidelines and funding sources.
- Collaborate with program staff and supervisors to ensure effective communication and coordination of services.
Qualifications:
- Experience helping/working with people with a disability is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of the challenges faced by adults with disabilities and a commitment to promoting their independence and self-determination.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including empathy, active listening, and effective communication.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and adaptable approach to service delivery.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Knowledge of community resources and services for individuals with disabilities is beneficial.
- Empathy, compassion, and non-judgmental attitude towards clients
- Must pass background checks and any other requirements mandated by the employing organization or regulatory agencies.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or training in special education, human services, social work, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in working with individuals with disabilities is desirable.
- Certification as a Peer Support Specialist may be required or preferred, depending on the employer and local regulations.
