Position Summary: Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) is seeking a dedicated and talented Publications Manager to join the Marketing and Communications team to develop, design, and execute all print publications. Reporting to the SR Director of Marketing and Communications, the Publications Manager will play an essential role in advancing organizational goals and strengthening its brand, in coordination with other communication channel leads, through the strategic creation of collateral and publications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Content Strategy and Planning:
- In close collaboration with the marcom director and other communication channel leads (digital content, fundraising communications, and corporate partnerships), the publications manager will develop and implement a print content strategy that is part of an overall integrated marketing and communications program that ensures consistency, brand value, and maximum engagement with and positive experience of ARF’s key audiences.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders and program directors to identify communications needs and content opportunities with target audiences in mind.
- Publication Production:
- Oversee the creation and production of a range of collateral and publications, including an impact report, quarterly magazine, brochures, signage, promotional materials and other branded collateral.
- Advance the spirit and aesthetic of the brand through innovative, high-quality design and production.
- Manage production with various vendors, including our mail house.
- Project Management:
- Effectively manage timelines and coordination with colleagues and key stakeholders to procure necessary content and approvals.
- Manage and track all publication projects utilizing project management tools such as Asana.
- Content Creation:
- Conceptualize, write, and edit various forms of content including articles, reports, flyers, etc.
Work with staff, volunteers, and donors to gather compelling stories and testimonials.
- Develop and maintain an effective system for capturing, developing, organizing, and utilizing various forms of stories and related assets (written, video, photo, etc.) for use across all ARF channels.
- Graphic Design and Visual Media:
- Leverage design software Adobe Illustrated, Canva, etc.) to create visually appealing graphics and infographics for publications.
- Maintain and adhere to the organization's visual identity guidelines.
- Analytics and Evaluation:
- Monitor the performance of publications using analytics tools.
- Make data-driven decisions to improve content and publication strategies.
- Compliance and Branding:
- Ensure all publications are in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Maintain brand consistency in all materials.
- Leadership:
- Lead by action and example to advance a culture of positivity, professionalism, trust, transparency, empathy, and excellence at ARF.
- Manage vendors, designers, photographers, etc., as needed.
- Ensure that colleagues who are providing content (writing articles, taking photos, providing data) meet deadlines.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
- Five-plus years of experience in graphic design, publications management, content creation, and digital media.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional design skills with a strong, nuanced understanding of aesthetic and visual design principles
- Experience developing layouts for a range of publications and collateral; experience laying out a magazine or complex report preferred.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated experience in graphic design and familiarity with design software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva).
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks, contributors, and review cycles.
- Experience working in a nonprofit or social enterprise a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Knowledge of analytics tools and data-driven decision-making.
- Enthusiasm for the human-animal bond; concern for the welfare of people and animals; comfort with animals in the workplace.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:
Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
Push/pull/lift 25 pounds and do physical work relative to setting up and breaking down event sites (packing/shipping supplies for off-site events, loading/unloading trucks, moving tables & chairs, etc.). Kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand, and/or walk frequently and repetitively before, during, and after events. Flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist. Sit for long periods of time while using a computer.
Hours:
Exempt positions require a minimum of 40 hours per week. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary. Weekend, holiday, and evening work required, as well as occasional travel via car and plane.
The office is located in Walnut Creek. This job is primarily onsite with remote work flexibility on and as needed basis.
