  • POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Trade Compliance Analyst role at Ocean State Job Lot (“OSJL” or “Company”) is responsible for ensuring that the importing and supply chain security activities of the Company comply with governmental laws and regulations. Additionally, the role interacts with business partners and government agencies to maintain good working relationships as a way to ensure and execute import best practices.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Determine the classification of products using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S. according to General Rules Interpretation, Binding Rulings, and other established customs guidelines.
    • Coordinate inter-department initiatives with various teams, such as, but not limited to, the logistics teams, global security teams, lab services teams, customer service teams, warehouse teams, and finance teams.
    • Provide guidance to the Customs Compliance Team members in order to provide best-in-class service and duty savings opportunities for Buyers’ product categories.
    • Maintain and update detailed product information in the database item files.
    • Provide day-to-day import internal control and supply chain security guidance to the Company’s departments.
    • Develop and deliver customs compliance training to Company associates, as needed.
    • Audit and provide oversight of third party providers (i.e., Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders, and International Carriers).
    • Focus on compliance elements while meeting agreed service and compliance levels.
    • Develop and assist in the maintenance of import and supply chain compliance records in accordance with governmental regulations.
    • Monitor customs brokers’ compliance with standard operating procedures by means of internal audit of customs entries, including documenting findings in an internal bi-annual audit of U.S. Customs entries.
    • Interface with customs brokers and U.S. Customs and Border Protection or other governmental agencies as necessary on a daily basis to ensure compliance and expedite entry release.
    • Identify, recommend, and implement import compliance and operational synergies to reduce cost and regulatory risk.
    • Maintain the food safety verification program.
    • Monitor regulatory and legislative changes within the industry to ensure up to date information is provided as well as taking advantage of all available programs.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience is required.
    • Customs Certified Specialist or broker's license is preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of product classification and all current U.S. Customs laws and regulations.
    • 5 or more years of experience performing the essential functions expressed is required. Preferred experience in the following governmental agencies: FDA, USDA, EPA, and CPSC.
    • Previous experience working in either a customs brokerage or large importer’s compliance department is preferred.
    • Proactive, flexible and can easily adjust to shifting priorities.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google platform (i.e., Slides, Sheets, Sites, Docs, Drive).

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Works primarily in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety and health hazard
      potential.
    • Works in an office environment remaining stationary at a desk, table, or computer workstation for extended periods of time. Frequently uses near vision for reading and computer tasks.
