Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

The Public Relations Specialist maintains the brand, identity, and reputation of the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. The position is responsible for building and implementing strategies for the Museum's public relations, social media, website, and marketing effort.

    How does it get done?

For at least 4,000 years, people have been growing food in this region, and the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum (Farm & Ranch) in Las Cruces, tells this amazing story through interactive exhibits, demonstrations, oral histories, objects, and educational programs. The campus features several barns, animals, a greenhouse, play areas for children, an amphitheater, the Heritage Garden, and much more. Permanent and changing exhibits, as well as a theater, library, gift shop, snack bar, and meeting rooms are located in the 100,000-square-feet, ranch-style Bruce King Building. The combination of the beautiful, spacious main building and the 47-acre property with barns, trees, gardens, and animals create a physical working environment that is outstanding. The Museum's staff members come from a variety of backgrounds and combine their skills to make an efficient, positive team.

In collaboration with leadership, the Public Relations Specialist serves as a designated spokesperson for Farm & Ranch and responds to requests for information from the media, the public, and stakeholders. They develop communications strategies for the Museum in support of exhibitions, education and outreach activities, events, and other sensitive issues and collaborate with New Mexico Department of Cultural Affair's (NMDCA) communication team on its master plan. They prepare and distribute news releases and media alerts, cultivate and maintain relationships with local and regional media outlets, send direct pitches and follow-up communications, develop press kit materials, and plan media events. They prepare or edit organizational publications for internal and external audiences, including newsletters, marketing collateral, and reports. They seek to understand the attitudes and concerns of community, employee and public interest groups to establish and maintain cooperative relationships between them and representatives from print, broadcast, and online journalism. They gauge public opinion through surveys, polls, and social media listening. In collaboration with the DCA marketing and branding manager, they assist with advertising and promotional campaign development and implementation, and special marketing events. They maintain and manage content on websites and assist in acommunication efforts. They strategize on the post content for Farm & Ranch social media platforms and provide content for the NMDCA main social media pages.
