Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments. Collects, prepares, and tests samples and records measurements or observations. Being a Laboratory Assistant prepares reports detailing results and conclusions, applications, and methodology. Conducts routine maintenance and safety checks on lab equipment to ensure working order. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Laboratory Assistant work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Laboratory Assistant typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Lab Technician
Reports To: Lab Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare reports, analyze data and make recommendations for adjusting process conditions to ensure that QA standards are met.
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
Assist in implementing the Quality Assurance program for the ethanol plant to maximum production quantity and quality.
Assist Lab Manager in conduction of Plant Scale Trials
Assist in Development of new test methods and procedures
Monitor use and inventories of laboratory chemicals and supplies.
Instruct laboratory techniques, procedures, and equipment use to others.
Support the policies, goals, and objectives of the company.
Participate in programs and procedures required to ensure plant cleanliness.
Maintain environmental, health, and safety policies/procedures.
Maintain established, implemented, and updated food safety management system and procedures.
Maintain USP general notice, monograph, and excipient manufacturer requirements.
Maintain a TEAM environment with all plant employees.
An employee with any known allergen including, but not limited to, nuts, gluten, livestock, penicillin, etc., shall make it known to CIE after a conditional offer of employment.
Assist Plant Operations Department with critical tasks such as plant upsets, shutdowns, etc.
Daily Duties
Calibration and monitoring of pH probes.
Monitor fermentation data, including DE testing and solids testing.
Stock and monitor inventories of lab supplies.
Perform environmental discharge sampling and testing.
Prepare lab stock solutions and mobile phases for liquid chromatography equipment.
Perform certification testing for outbound ethanol which includes acidity, pHe, GC volatiles, Karl Fisher moisture, and proof testing.
Maintain Karl Fisher & Acidity titrators.
Perform fermentation testing which includes yeast counting, Brix, ph, and HPLC chromatography.
Monitor gas usage and inventory for laboratory instrumentation.
Manage Laboratory Sanitation Program.
Perform Bench Scale Fermentations
Calibrate and Maintain NIR(Near Infra-Red) equipment
Perform certification testing for outbound ethanol which includes acidity, GC volatiles, clarity, color, organoleptic, and proof testing.
Maintain GC2014, DMA5000, ATR-FTIR, Nesslerizer, and UV1800 instruments.
Submit product samples to potential/existing customers
Food Safety Requirements
Have a basic understanding of the GMPs and Food Security.
Notify the Food Safety Manager and/or Supervisor of any repairs or adjustments that are required.
Perform Basic Sanitation Functions.
Perform all duties necessary to meet CIE’s and or Government requirements/standards as prioritized by HACCP and FSSC 22000.
Notify the Food Safety Manager or any other Management personnel of ANY Food Safety or Quality issues.
Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the raw material, processes, quality system, or safety system, by performing Production/Quality Checks as assigned.
Controls further processing or delivery of non-conforming products in terms of Food Safety and Quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
Job & Skill Requirements
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Windows based software.
Use of potentially hazardous and/or dangerous chemicals.
Exposure to potential allergens.
Night, Weekend, & Holiday work as required.
