Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments. Collects, prepares, and tests samples and records measurements or observations. Being a Laboratory Assistant prepares reports detailing results and conclusions, applications, and methodology. Conducts routine maintenance and safety checks on lab equipment to ensure working order. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Laboratory Assistant work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Laboratory Assistant typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Must perform medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses for the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of diseases. Conducts chemical examinations of body fluids to find the presence of abnormal and normal components. Communication skills are essential in order to greet patients and answer incoming phone calls. Must have a professional and friendly attitude, be organized and have the ability to follow directions while multi-tasking in high stress situations. Must be detail oriented to ensure that the correct patient information and results are being entered. Must be professional in appearance and have dependable transportation. Basic computer and typing skills are required along with knowledge of office equipment. Minimum high school diploma or GED as well as current certification as a Laboratory Assistant by the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners required. Two or more years of laboratory assistant experience preferred.
