    Context of the Job:

    The University of Delaware Avian Bioscience Center (ABC) supports the local, regional, national, and international poultry industries and agricultural producers in supplying consumers with a sustainable, safe, and economical food source. The Charles C. Allen, Jr. Biotechnology Laboratory (CCABL) is a key component of the ABC and is a world-class facility providing diagnostic capabilities and Biosafety Level 3 research facilities.

    The CCABL Lab Coordinator II reports to the CCABL Senior Scientist within the University of Delaware Avian Biosciences Center. The CCABL Lab Coordinator II manages facility operations and coordinates the activities of the CCABL, providing support to faculty, staff, extension professionals, students and facilities personnel. This position also performs a variety of technical tasks related to special operations of the CCABL such as Biosafety Level 3 operations and containment in accordance with USDA APHIS Select Agent program requirements. The CCABL Lab Coordinator II also coordinates the operations, and coordinates activities on the Poultry Research and Teaching Unit (PRTU) on the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources College Farm in Newark.

    Major Responsibilities:

    • Monitors the CCABL building automation system, coordinates with UD Facilities and UD Public Safety and is on call 24/7 to interface with these units to maintain the proper operation of the CCABL and the PRTU.
    • Manages and assists with the operation and maintenance of the CCABL to meet Select Agent program requirements including the liquid waste disposal system and fumigation procedures.
    • Manages and assists as needed with the set-up, cleaning, decontamination and maintenance of the animal facilities in the CCABL.
    • Assists in coordinating the scheduling and use of Newark poultry facilities (CCABL and PRTU).
    • Compiles billing associated with facility use (CCABL and PRTU) for financial processing by the Department of Animal and Food Sciences Administrative Support Team.
    • Develops and provides required CCABL training for faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students to use CCABL facilities.
    • Collaborates with the Select Agent committee in the development/revision and implementation of policies, and standard operating procedures for the CCABL operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
    • May assist in the management and execution of basic and applied poultry research projects and other training/research/outreach activities as directed by the CCABL Senior Scientist.
    • Responsible for complying with university policies, procedures, and best practices regarding protecting data and following UD data governance rules.
    • Assists CCABL Senior Scientist in establishing user rates for internal and external customers per schedule established by central accounting.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or Agricultural Engineering or related field and four years of experience in laboratory operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Understating of engineering principles of HVAC and/or building automation systems.
    • Familiarity with computer/web-based facilities management and operation systems.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to effectively communicate, both oral and written, with a diverse group of clientele.
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • Strong computer skills.
    • Must be able to meet the requirements to wear a full-face respirator and lift 50 lbs.
    • Must pass a background check for Select Agent program participation.
