The Laboratory Technician I performs various simple laboratory work under supervision of a medical technologist. Has educational background compatible with the demands of his/her duties. Primary duties include performing phlebotomies, operating lab equipment, identifying, evaluating, and packing specimens, computer order entry, and other related duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Compliance with HHSC Immunization Policy required: serologic evidence of immunity to or documented evidence of vaccination against, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Tdap, Hepatitis B, and annual vaccination against influenza.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Maintains laboratory equipment by performing set-ups, making necessary adjustments, performing maintenance, and cleaning laboratory equipment.
Performs phlebotomies on patients of all ages, using age specific skills.
Performs computer data entry following established procedures.
Prepares specimens for shipment following established procedures.
Checks all samples collected or submitted for appropriateness following established procedures.
Performs required tasks to assure smooth operation of the lab.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform phlebotomies and to operate lab equipment, computers, and general office equipment. Communication (oral and written) skills. Knowledge of laboratory and medical terminology.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

All these diseases are vaccine preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals.
