Lactation Consultant provides lactation support and education to patients and families. May plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers. Being a Lactation Consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems, and advising physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients. Requires an associate degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Lactation Consultant requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.     Demonstrates the ability to provide lactation management to expectant and new parents in accordance with hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. Supports System and Nursing Strategic Plans, Relationship-Based Care, and Shared Leadership.

    • Assists with planning, teaching and evaluation classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers.
    • Conducts daily bedside lactation rounds.
    • Consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems.
    • Selects appropriate breastfeeding supplies for the patient use.
    • Plans, organizes and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients.
    • Demonstrates the ability to lead, organize and develop lactation programs.
    • Conducts quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program.
    • Systematically and continually collects data regarding the health status of the client. The data is recorded, accessible and communicated to appropriate members of the Multidisciplinary Healthcare Team utilizing system policies, and procedures.
    • Coordinates a comprehensive individualized plan of care for the client, significant other and healthcare provider to obtain expected outcomes partnering with the patient and family to identify and prioritize needs and care.
    • Implements the plan of care in accordance with established policies, and procedures in a safe and appropriate manner.
    • Determines both the client's progress towards the attainment of expected outcomes and the effectiveness of nursing care.
    • Demonstrates ability in planning, delegation, and coordination of work group activities essential for the provision of quality nursing care. and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.
    • Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.
    • Offers support and feedback to peers and staff. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.
    • Plans, teaches and conducts in-service education for the staff.
    • Offers consistent and visible support to team members.
    • Professional standards and current research/evidence-based practice drive decision-making.
    • Supports Shared Leadership and encourages staff participation on unit- based teams. in an effective and professional manner, demonstrating respect for patients, families/significant others, and other health teams. members.
    • Communicates in an effective and professional manner, demonstrating respect for patients, families/significant others and other health team members.
    • Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE manual.
    • Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code Yellow (when called), Code Green (when called), Code Blue (when called).
    • Responsible for honest behavior in all matters. To the best of the employee's knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.

    Qualifications
    • Meets licensing requirements to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland.
    • Must meet all applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements.
    • A Registered Nurse with three to five years of experience in the specialty.
    • Lactation certification preferred.
    • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to educate patients and their families and work with medical, nursing and management staff.
    • Must have demonstrated ability in public speaking
