Job Title: Legal Assistant
Hours: Regular Full-Time: Monday-Friday
Pay Range: $19.45/hour; plus, longevity, if applicable
Department: Clerk of Courts Office
Reports to: Clerk of Courts within the Circuit Court
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Position Purpose: Responsible for performing technical assistance, administrative, clerical
and receptionist services. Must be able to work under stressful situations
involving many deadlines and time limits. At times, will work
independently and must initiate and complete projects and programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform duties relating to all cases including case initiation, receiving and filing case
documents, and disposing of cases.
Prepare authenticated copies, calendar index and enter court data in CCAP system for the
State.
Clerk court activities for all types of court hearings.
Assist in posting fines, court costs, and filing fees.
Conduct record searches of court files.
Assist in answering questions of the public, answering the phone, and process daily mail.
Performs routine clerical tasks such as sorting, recording, filing, and typing as required.
Process passport applications.
Participate in continuing appropriate training.
Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Associate degree in Business, Criminal Justice, or related field OR combination of work
experience and training equivalent to two years of increasingly varied and complex office
experience.
Strong computer knowledge and experience necessary.
Ability to type (speed minimumwpm) and do accurate clerical work.
Knowledge of Circuit Court system helpful.
Knowledge of principles and practices of business management with regard to office
management, bookkeeping and accounting.
Considerable knowledge of modern office procedures, equipment, and practice.
Preference given to applicants with additional training and/or experience in word processing
(Word), spreadsheets (Excel), database programs, and the Circuit Court Automated Program
(CCAP).
Ability to follow written and oral directions
Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and confidentially with the general public, County Officials,
and coworkers.
Ability to perform tasks while being subject to frequent interruptions.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to plan, organize, and schedule priorities effectively.
Ability to read and write and to use independent judgment.
Ability to work with confidential records and keep confidentiality.
Ability to input and retrieve data on computer and perform word-processing functions.
Ability to compose and set up letters and use proper grammar.
Ability to work under limited supervision once on the job training is complete.
