Legal Services Director oversees the activities of the organization's legal department. Provides legal advice, interpretation, and guidance to senior management and officers regarding contracts, state/federal regulatory requirements, intellectual property or trademark protection, and other business matters. Being a Legal Services Director reviews all information and prepares defense for any legal actions against the organization or advises on prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the organization. Coordinates and reviews the work of internal or external legal staff. Additionally, Legal Services Director manages staff of attorneys. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to top management. The Legal Services Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Legal Services Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

    For over 50 years, CCLS has been representing and advocating for low-income individuals in Fresno, Kings, Mariposa, Merced, Tulare, and Tuolumne Counties. In partnership with the statewide Health Consumer Alliance (HCA), CCLS also addresses specific health care access concerns for residents in the counties of San Luis Obispo, Stanislaus, Madera, Monterey, and San Benito. With a $13 million budget and more than 90 employees, our mission is to provide high quality, no-cost civil legal services to low-income individuals, families, and communities—improving the wellbeing of our Valley through systems-changing advocacy, client education, and legal work that meets individual clients’ immediate needs. We also work closely with agencies and community organizations that share our commitment to support our clients in being their own agents of change. 



    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Due to the high demand for our services, we are seeking an entrepreneurial leader to enhance our fundraising efforts. The Director of Development will play a crucial role in expanding and sustaining our fundraising programs, increasing support from individuals, companies, private foundations, and government sources. They will report directly to the Executive Director and help achieve the organization's fundraising goals.


    We are looking for a creative and inclusive professional who can inspire individuals and organizations to join our community of funders. The Development Director should have a passion for legal aid and social justice. They will collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to establish partnerships and act as a spokesperson for our mission in the community. The Development Director will supervise a team of three including: Deputy Director of Development, Senior Grants Manager, and Development Associate. This position is ideal for someone looking to advance their career.


    The Development Director will be responsible for leading fundraising and communications efforts across multiple offices. They will develop innovative grant fundraising strategies aligned with our mission, including activities such as prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship. The Development Director will also work closely with the Director of Pro Bono and Strategic Partnerships to secure financial and program support from law firms.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


    Government Grant and Foundation Oversight: 

    • Oversee all grant-related work on behalf of CCLS, including identifying and pursuing potential foundation and government grant opportunities.
    • Oversee the Senior Grants Manager and provide guidance and support in the drafting and preparation of solicitations, proposals, and reports.
    • Monitor fundraising progress and provide regular reports and updates to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. 

    Fund Development:

    • Create and execute an annual plan to increase private revenue from law firms, private foundations, individuals, and corporations.
    • Collectively support and contribute to the increase of the organization’s revenue goals and increase philanthropic revenue in the next 3 years.
    • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to identify and cultivate potential donors and secure major gifts.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential donors, including individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
    • Work with the Board of Directors to engage them in fundraising activities and provide support and training as needed. Manage fundraising committee of board members.
    • Maintain a portfolio of foundations and work to identify, research, and set strategies for foundations that are likely prospects for CCLS’ initiatives. Apply knowledge of initiatives to identify and target prospects.  

    Special Events:

    • Organize events to enhance donations, partnering with strategic allies and utilizing the name of CCLS.
    • Serve as the primary fundraiser for CCLS’ annual fundraising event, Champions of Justice.  Oversee a committee involved in event planning, comprised of board members, the Executive Director, and community members.

    Communications and Public Relations:

    • Deliver donor presentations and provide training to staff members on building and maintaining donor relationships.
    • Oversee the creation of newsletters, videos, email updates, and other mailings and publications.  Collaborate with program staff to develop effective messaging and promotional materials.
    • Utilize the organization's website, social media platforms, and other media channels for fundraising efforts.
    • Communicate with donors and engage in discussions about ongoing involvement and financial contributions.

    Database and Records Management:

    • Maintain accurate records of contributions, deadlines, and correspondence. Keep the donor database and other contributor records up to date.
    • Ensure security and quality controls for all fundraising records and materials.
    • Analyze reports, conduct queries, and collect necessary data. Generate regular fundraising reports for evaluation and decision-making.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's Degree.  
    • At least ten years fundraising experience.
    • Commitment to CCLS’ mission and values.
    • A clear record of building relationships with funders and personally securing major gifts.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Adaptable, organized and detail-oriented.
    • High professional standards and ability to provide evidence of success in meeting or exceeding goals.
    • Team-oriented approach and a positive attitude.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with all levels of the organization and with the public.
    • Self-motivated with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
    • Able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
    • Ability to assume responsibilities quickly and work independently.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage members of a high-functioning team and volunteers.
    • Knowledge of the legal community in the Central Valley is helpful but not required.
    • Familiarity with non-profit CRM systems such as Donor Perfect, Razor’s Edge or Salesforce.
