Library Cataloger, Technical Services Manager

  • This position has primary responsibility for the daily operations and staff of the Technical Services Department. Performs original and copy cataloging in accordance with professional standards. Works public desks as assigned.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of Technical Services staff and functions. This responsibility includes, but is not limited to, training, implementation of policies and procedures, workflow and oversight of tasks performed within the Department.
    • Responsible for the operation of our ILS system (Innovative Interfaces).
    • Communicates with Assistant Director regarding Department activities, including producing and providing reports and other information.
    • Creates original cataloging and upgrades copy catalog records, particularly for items involving difficult or unusual entries.
    • Responsible for catalog maintenance, including creation and editing of existing bibliographic and authority records to enhance access and to conform to standards.
    • Maintains professional cataloging standards, including monitoring and staying current with AACR2, OCLC input, LCSH, and DDC.
    • Communicates current practices of the Technical Services Department to other professionals, departments and staff so that they may make optimal use of the library catalog and other resources.
    • Works shifts on public service desks. Serves on library committees and participates in collection development activities.
    • Responsible for the end-of-year audit report for Technical Services. Provides statistics, data, and information for reports including the monthly Board Report and State Library statistics.
    • Performs expanded duties and special projects as assigned.

    • Must demonstrate professional attitude and ability and managerial skills.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    Selects, trains, schedules and evaluates staff.

    Work Environment

    This job operates in a professional office environment. Will work behind counters, with computers and patrons, at public service desks. This role routinely uses stand office equipment such as computers, cash registers, phones, printers, photocopiers, calculators, etc.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    Generally 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday, with some evening and weekend hours. This position will participate in the scheduled weekend work rotation.

    Education/Experience

    • MLS from ALA-accredited program.
    • Two years relevant professional experience required.
    • Two years supervisory experience preferred.

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications

    High degree of customer service skills to work with patrons of all ages and library staff.
