    Primary Function of Organizational Unit
    The James E. Shepard Memorial Library of North Carolina Central University serves as the main academic library for the institution with a commitment to provide quality service to our students, faculty, staff and community. The library provides technology and resources in support of faculty and student teaching, learning, research and scholarship.
    Additionally, we engage in service to our profession.
    Primary Purpose of Position
    The Assistant Director for library Services will assist the Director of Library Services in the daily operations of the library and direct responsibility for the coordination among the leadership for several departments. The Assistant Director will support the Director in the planning and management of budgets, strategic planning, staff management and special projects. The position serves as the primary library administrator in the absence of the Director and represents the Director as assigned and requested.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of library operation including extensive knowledge of contemporary library practices trends and emerging technologies.
    Evidence of project or programmatic leadership and the ability to develop a vision for delivering library services.
    Strong analytical and decision making skills;
    Excellent communication skills: oral, written, listening and interpersonal.
    Excellent organization skills and sound judgment.
    Ability to work enthusiastically, constructively and collaboratively with others as well as independently.
    Successful mentoring skills that empower others to excel and work well as part of a team.
    Ability to interact and work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups and to encourage an environment of mutual respect.

    Minimum Education/Experience
    The minimum academic credential required for this non-tenure faculty position is a master's degree from an ALA accredited institution in the field of library and information science.
    A minimum of 3 -5 years of academic library experience in positions with progressive levels of responsibility; a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience requirements.

    Primary Responsibilities and Duties

    Function Supervision/Leadership
    Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
    Assist the Library Director in the day-to day management of the library including evenings and weekends.
    Direct responsibility for the coordination among the leadership for several departments.
    Provide leadership and support the Library Director with personnel, budget, strategic planning, administrative matters and special projects.
    Take a leadership role in developing strong partnership with academic units.
    Function Administrative
    Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
    1. Serves as the primary library administrator in the absence of the Director and represents the Director as assigned and or requested.
    2. Work closely with the Library Director and leadership team of the library to lead, inspire and create an innovative, customer- focused library for our current and future constituents.
    3. Work with the Director to establish strategic goals and objectives, determine enterprise wide activities and collaborations, and prepare administrative reports.
    4. Able to handle and maintain confidentiality.
    5. Mentor library faculty and staff.
    6. Represent the library on appropriate library, campus, local/ regional and national committees.
    7. Supervise library faculty, staff and student workers.
    8. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
    Function Supervision/Leadership

    1. Supervise and schedule orientation and training of all personnel within the library including faculty, staff and student workers and or volunteers.
    2. Ensure that all departmental manuals are updated and maintained.
    3. Assist & support the Director with the Friends of Library program.
