Library Services Director supervises, maintains, and enhances policies and procedures for a library. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Library Services Director selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Requires master's of library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. Additionally, Library Services Director typically reports to top management. The Library Services Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Library Services Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     This position supports the work of the Adult Services department, primarily by staffing the library’s Information Desk, providing information promptly and accurately, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance to library users, via phone, email, and in person. Other job duties include but are not limited to: collection maintenance support, reading program support, and preparation of displays, booklists, and other materials.

    This position is scheduled 16 for hours per week.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Assists patrons at the Information Desk with a variety of informational and technical needs, including copying/scanning/faxing.
    • Assists patrons with the use of computers and other technology, including e-readers and other mobile devices.
    • Performs reader’s advisory and ready reference.
    • Assists with projects relating to collection development, including selection of library materials, as assigned.
    • Maintains the confidentiality of library records.
    • May assist with library programs, preparation of promotional materials and other projects/activities as needed.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    Requirements of Work

    High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework in library studies preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:


    Knowledge of


    • Working knowledge of library methods and procedures
    • Requires fluency in English.


    Ability to


    • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures.
    • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively with staff and public and maintain effective public relations.
    • Ability to operate library equipment properly.


    Skill in


    • Requires keyboarding, filing, and office programming ability, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, audio-visual equipment, Microsoft Office Suite and LinkCat.


    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Flexible work hours with frequent evening and weekend hours.
    • Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.
    • Proficiency in Spanish desired.

    • Work is performed mostly in a Library setting; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or to stand for prolonged periods of time.
    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and pushing and pulling objects on wheels weighing 60-80 pounds.
