Library Services Manager manages the daily planning, staff, and operations for the acquisition, classification, maintenance, licensing, and distribution of print and digital materials to meet the information needs of library users. Coordinates process to research, review, identify and procure new materials to develop the library's collection. Being a Library Services Manager performs cataloging and creates bibliographies and metadata to classify the library's collection of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual, and other materials. Develops and oversees support, service, and technology resources to ensure that groups and individuals can access requested materials. Additionally, Library Services Manager requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Library Services Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensure an outstanding customer experience for all users, with special focus on adult borrowers, browsers, and computer users. |
Envision, develop, and deploy creative strategies for improving adult programming, reader’s advisory, digital inclusion, and circulation services. Translate library goals into projects that improve existing services or create new ones. Successfully manage and assess such projects. |
Oversee the quick and efficient flow of materials to and from customers hands. Develop and support policies, procedures, and spaces that promote discovery of materials and decrease barriers to access. Oversee the management of public computing resources and systems. |
Manage the hiring, training, and supervision of Library Experience Division staff. Allocate staff resources effectively and efficiently to ensure a high degree of customer satisfaction. Develop and foster an innovative, collaborative team mindset. |
Provide departmental leadership. Contribute to the Library Management Team. Collaborate with library administration & other managers to achieve strategic goals. Serve on Town-wide teams or initiatives as directed. |
Stay abreast of trends and best practices in Public Service Librarianship. Identify and pursue grant funding for special projects that meet organizational goals. |
Foster and maintain strong relationships with key community partners, Town colleagues, vendors, and local library peers. |
Performs other tasks as required. |

An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job. | |
Formal Education | Master’s of Library Science or equivalent combination of experience and education. |
Experience | Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public library services, including supervision. |
Supervision | Manages and monitors the work performance of a Library Division. Supervises and monitors the work of a regular group of employees and subordinate supervisors. Is responsible for hiring decisions and disciplinary actions in coordination with the Assistant Director, Director, and HRD. Establishes employee work objectives and realigns work as needed. Conducts performance evaluations. |
Knowledge of: | Town and Library policies and procedures. Integrated Library Systems (ILS). Trends and best practices in circulation and public library services for adults, including collection management. Departmental rules, policies, procedures related to personnel processes. Project management techniques. Grant writing and administration. User Centered design theories. General office computing systems and technologies. |
Ability to: | Positively interact with a diverse clientele. Interpret and communicate library policies and procedures. Model Town RESPECT values. Lead high-functioning teams, think systematically, build consensus, engage stakeholders, and accomplish objectives. |
Physical Demands | This work is performed sitting, standing, walking, squatting, reaching, pushing, and bending. It requires a high degree of dexterity. It requires lifting 10-15 pounds. |
Work Environment | This work is usually performed inside a busy public library and in an office setting. Requires some weekend and evening hours. |
Certification & Other Requirements | Valid NC Driver’s License, Regular Class C. |
