Docket Clerk - Municipal Court

  • This is specialized clerical work preparing daily court dockets and recording instructions for disposition of the cases as directed by the judge. The employee works independently, following established procedures.

    The days and hours for this position: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

    Bargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU)

    • Compiles a court docket of the cases that will be heard and disposed of by a judge during a specific court session.
    • Gathers cases from files by designated dates, reviews files for previous arrests of defendants, and ensures that all necessary information is available to the judge.
    • Assigns court-appointed attorneys to cases. 
    • Updates records on all transactions.
    • Clerks the court, swears in witnesses, and maintains accurate records of judges' decisions.
    • Schedules arraignment and trial dates for court appearances.
    • Types information onto a variety of standard forms.
    • Answers questions about information and processes.
    • Accesses, interprets, enters, and/or modifies case information stored in an electronic database.
    • These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. 
    • Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
    • Knowledge of the standard computer keyboard configurations and ability to access, interpret, and record information using a video display terminal and electronic keyboard.
    • Ability to read and interpret statutes, directives, and ordinances.
    • Ability to hear and record oral instructions issued by the judge in the disposition of a case.
    • Ability to transport up to twenty-five pound loads of case records, generally contained in 8 1/2 x 11 manila folders.
    • Ability to access manual case files from ground level to overhead reaches, possibly requiring the use of a stool or ladder.
    • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
    • One and one-half years of clerical experience which must include some public contact work.
    • Must demonstrate typying proficiency of 45 words per minute.
    • Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests. 
    • Prior work experience in a legal office or court-related environment is preferred.
    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.  
    • Must also pass a Kansas Bureau of Investigation background investigation.
    Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening.
