Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     Specific Accountabilities

    • Reads and interprets specification manuals, blueprints, templates and layouts to determine machining operation to be performed.
    • Computes dimensions and tolerances and measures and lays out work pieces
    • Verifies dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges and micrometers.
    • Troubleshoots, debugs and modifies to achieve expected performance.
    • Adjusts and sets up machine tools for use by machining tool operators.
    • Participates in continuous improvement of cell processes.
    • Cross trains in other complementary skills and seeks endorsements for those skills as needed to support production requirements.
    • Moves between production assignments that utilize multiple skills endorsements as needed to support production requirements.
    • Participates in the cross training of other technicians as needed to support production requirements.
    • Responsible for observing all applicable safety requirements and reporting immediately any unsafe practices/conditions.
    • Carries out other duties as assigned.


    Technical Requirements

    • High degree of mechanical aptitude, accuracy and precision.
    • Thorough knowledge of manufacturing, tool design, fabrication methods and processes, metallurgy and heat treating.
    • Working knowledge of welding, hydraulics, electricity and pneumatics.
    • Must be proficient in the operation of Manual VTL, Lathes and Mills.
    • Prior experience in machine set ups, tool changes are preferred.
    • Prior or current programming experience preferred.
    • Basic knowledge of G&M codes preferred.
    • Prior or current CNC experience would be a plus.
    • Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
    • Ability to hold tight measurement tolerances
    • Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints.
    • Strong mathematical aptitude.
