Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Duties- Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
- Programs mills by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, proving part programs.
- Reading blueprints to determine method of machining
- Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample workpieces; adhering to customer drawings and specifications
- Understand bills of material, process sheets
- Program machining center using offline programing software
- Setup and choose proper fixturing for parts
- Run CNC machining center
- Use measuring instruments and perform quality checks on first piece and in process production
- Perform tear down of set-ups and proper storage of tools, fixtures, etc. and maintain good housekeeping
- Follow safe operating practices
