Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Primary Objective: Supports production operations by performing low to moderate machining operations. This position typically works under direct supervision, operating one or more types of machine tools such as mills, drill presses, lathes, etc.
Key Job Duties:
1. Reads and interprets specific machining instructions from blueprints, part and machine drawings.
2. Sets up basic tooling on manual mills.
3. Sets up, operates and programs a broad range of production work involving some close tolerance, set ups that are exacting , are somewhat involved and have a low to moderate degree of difficulty.
4. Performs other secondary operations such as stamping part numbers and deburring during machine cycle times.
5. Inspects machine parts to ensure they meet proper size, shape, or tolerance specs using micrometers and other measuring tools and devices.
6. Performs routine maintenance.
7. Participates and contributes to Massman’s lean manufacturing journey.
8. Assists in other areas and performs additional tasks as needed.
