Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. GENERAL FUNCTION: The outside machinist is responsible for installing the vessel’s machinery, such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities:
Works from blueprints and use hand tools, calipers and micrometers.
Layout passage holes on bulk heads, decks and other surfaces for connections, such as shafting and steam lines.
Installs below deck auxiliaries, such as evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connect them to steam pipe systems.
Responsible for testing and inspecting installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
May set-up and operate such machine shop tools as a lathe, boring mill, planer, shaper, slotter and milling machine to fabricate replacement parts.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of gauges, calipers micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters and milling machines. Capable of reading blueprints
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAINING: Prior experience as an outside machinist or boilermaker in a heavy industrial or shipbuilding environment. Vocational training in the field of machinist is helpful.
