    Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering (ICE) is seeking a self-motivated Geotechnical Engineering Intern to join our team in May of 2024 for a 12-week internship in the West Columbia, SC office. Internships with ICE allow you to continue your education with a real-world experience that will enhance your future academic experiences. There is room for growth within our organization for dedicated civil engineering professionals.  All employment offers are contingent upon the applicant successfully completing drug and background screenings. Internships provide an opportunity to be part of a diverse and engaged community of professionals and to be treated as a respected and valued member of the ICE team.Once qualified candidates have been identified, the recruiting team will schedule interviews.
     
    This internship spans 12 weeks, starting sometime in May and ending in August. The exact start and end dates will be decided during the recruitment process.
     
    Position Summary 
    The Geotechnical Engineering Intern will work under the guidance of the Geotechnical Engineer and will assist the team with geotechnical analyses and designs for infrastructure projects that will include roadways, bridges, retaining walls, soils, asphalt, pavement, rock slopes, etc.  They will perform and develop subsurface investigation and laboratory testing plans, review boring logs and laboratory data. The intern will assist with design plans for a variety of geotechnical projects, to include but not limited to, slope stability, driving piles and boring drill shafts, reviewing seismic design deliverables, and providing guidance/feedback regarding seismic design methods. Job duties include structural design utilizing AASHTO and other applicable design specifications as well as state and local design requirements.
     
    Internship Requirements
    • Students pursuing an Associates, B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering, Geotech, or Environmental Engineering 
    • Must have the ability to take the FE Examination and received EIT Certification after graduation
    • Strong computer skills including MS Office suite and AutoCAD
    • Ability to speak and write professionally
    • Good interpersonal communication skills, commitment to deadlines, and positive team attitude
    • Willingness to learn and adapt to the fast-paced infrastructure industry
    • Demonstrated research skills and resourcefulness
    • Ability to work well individually and in a team
    • Demonstrated interest and ambition to learn and work in a competitive, fast-paced industry
    • Ability to work with project managers and engineers
    • Prior internship experience is preferred, but not required
    • Reliable transportation with a valid driver’s license
    • US Citizen or Permanent Resident (Green Card) required

    Career Development – ICE Mentor:
    Internships do not always include mentorship; however, we believe it is a crucial part to the success of our program. ICE interns are paired with more experienced staff members in order to provide guidance and support throughout the internship process. They will report directly to a Professional Engineer who will provide regular feedback, special training, guidance, evaluation, and support. The PE will provide information about their career path, as well as assisting the intern with exploring career opportunities at the firm, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources. In addition, interns will work with EIT’s who will aid in their development.
     
    We foster collaborative learning environment where interaction with our dedicated team of engineers encourages students to develop ideas and make mistakes. Collaborative learning also involves learning from peers and fellow interns. The primary goal of the internship is to gain as much infrastructure design experience as possible. While an intern may not have major tasks assigned to them, they should pay close attention to all the steps that go into completing the project. At the end of the internship, the intern should be confident to individually manage project tasks and work independently. ICE’s dedicated recruiting team will assist the intern with full-time employment opportunities, once they are ready to graduate.
     
    Expected Hours of Work: 
    The internship offers a structured work schedule of up to 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
