    Job Description

    The Executive Director of University Communications will lead the team responsible for creating the University's internal, external and executive communications. This includes advancing strong media relations, managing responsive crisis communications and developing comprehensive communication plans. The executive director works in close partnership with the Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications to manage University marketing and communications initiatives. The Executive Director of University Communications is expected to demonstrate strong organizational skills as they manage a workload with multiple priorities, confidential content and short timelines. 

    The Executive Director of University Communications supervises the communications functions in the Office of Marketing and Communications and works closely with marketing professionals embedded in units throughout the University.  This position will directly supervise four full-time team members:  The University’s Public Information Specialist,  Digital Media Coordinator, Photographer and Videographer. Together, the team of content creators will lead the University’s overall communications efforts. 

    Key responsibilities include: 

    • Lead the creation of strategic, integrated, multi-channel and compelling stories to represent the brand, protect the image and enhance the reputation of the University
    • Partner with the AVP of Marketing and Communications to provide visionary and expert leadership for the Office of Marketing and Communications to advance the University’s mission and accomplishment of strategic goals
    • Advise University leaders and marketing and communications professionals on strategy, tactics and best practices for developing communications
    • Direct all media relations, develop positive media relationships and utilize proactive and reactive media strategies to promote and share the University’s story; coordinate media interviews, news conferences, and other public relations events
    • Collaborate with University leaders to plan for, create and disseminate all emergency and crisis communications; respond to the media and serve as a knowledgeable, professional representative of the University when providing official statements or interviews
    • Direct the development and editing of University publications that serve as information sources for University highlights, accomplishments, announcements and information; develop messaging and determine the best distribution channels to reach the appropriate audiences
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of internal and external  communications; develop strategic plans to improve and enhance communications efforts
    • Work closely with the President’s Office to develop legislative and advocacy messaging and materials
    • Prepare informative materials, scripts, speeches, announcements and other communications for University leaders
    • Supervise the Public Information Specialist, Digital Media Coordinator, Photographer, and Videographer
    • Assist the Digital Media Coordinator with developing content and an annual strategic plan for social media
    • Coordinate with the Public Information Specialist to produce news releases, media advisories and communications to internal and external constituents
    • Coordinate with the Photographer and Videographer to incorporate visual media in communications strategies and tactics to strengthen messaging
    • Provide leadership, oversight, and feedback to the University Communications Team, which is composed of communications professionals embedded in University colleges and offices, to bolster overall storytelling for the University

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations or a related field
    • Five years of relevant experience with progressive responsibility and management
    • Demonstrated written communication skills that meet an array of organizational needs, including  news writing, social media content development and crisis communications
    • Experience writing communications that represent organizations or organizational leaders
    • Experience supervising a team of employees to accomplish strategic objectives
    • Experience in media relations

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in a related field
    • Experience in higher education marketing and communications
    • Experience using photography and videography as an integral part of organizational storytelling

    Additional Information
