    This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  National Aerospace Solutions is a limited liability company comprised of Bechtel National Inc. (as lead company) and Sierra Lobo Inc. with teaming Subcontractors nLogic Inc. and Chugach Federal Solutions Inc. AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

    AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground, and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

    Job Duties:
    • Provide support to organizations base-wide in material specification, selection, and processing, welding processes, quality control and testing, failure analysis, and scanning electron microscopy.
    • Perform metallurgical tests, including tensile, impact, hardness, metallography, and scanning electron microscopy on raw materials, welds, and components in accordance with industry standards.
    • Perform, document, and report mechanical failure analyses using metallurgical tests, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Provide recommendations where appropriate to minimize probability of recurrence.
    • Provide testing services, administer and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications, Procedure Qualification Records, and Welder Performance Qualifications in accordance with appropriate Codes.
    • Specify welding parameters to production personnel, including procedure assignments, inspection and test requirements.
    • Review design drawings for welding, special process, and inspection requirements and recommend changes as needed.
    • Review submittals from subcontractors for accuracy and completeness.
    • Assist production personnel in resolving problems with machining, welding, heat treatment, etc.
    • Analyze particulate samples from ducting and test articles to identify composition and morphology using SEM/EDX. Provide suggestions regarding origin where appropriate.
    • Use hand-held X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer to perform elemental analysis on bulk samples and determine the material type.
    • Assist nondestructive examination personnel in characterizing flaws discovered during inspection.
    • Perform operator maintenance and calibration procedures on laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
    • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    Basic Qualifications:
    • B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, materials science engineering or a closely related engineering or technical degree from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of 5 years of engineering experience. Additional relevant education can be substituted for experience.
    • United States Citizenship is required

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Active Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance
    • Experience in a facility engaged in the production of parts produced by primary (casting, forging, rolling) and/or secondary (welding, machining, heat treatment) methods. Experience should include laboratory techniques as well as involvement with production processes.
    • Course work including physical metallurgy (structure-properties relationships), mechanics of materials, welding metallurgy, forming and machining processes, heat treatment, laboratory practices, corrosion, surface treatments
    • Familiarity with industry Codes, including ASME Boiler, Pressure Vessel, and Piping Codes and AWS Structural Welding Codes; and standards, such as ASTM, AMS, and ASME material specifications is desirable
    • Ability to perform in a dynamic work environment with flexibility to accomplish mission needs
    • A self-starter with a can-do attitude and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
    • Ability to work in a team environment
    • Strong oral/written communication and interpersonal skills.
