Mechanical Designer designs and creates layouts and documentation for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and other mechanical building systems that meet project and technical specifications. Uses computer-aided design (CAD) and other specialized software tools to generate detailed layout plans, schematics, and drawings for mechanical systems. Being a Mechanical Designer maintains accurate and complete change and version control on all design files, documents, and drawings. Incorporates best practices to address design space constraints and ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and building codes. Additionally, Mechanical Designer collaborates with engineers and other project members. May conduct or participate in site visits to inspect installations or troubleshoot problems. May require an associate degree in mechanical design, drafting or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Mechanical Designer works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     Stantec offers a hybrid home/office work environment, and expects team members in one of our Puget Sound offices at least 2 days a week or more for all-staff meetings, project-related team work sessions, client meetings, and employee engagement functions etc.

    Your Opportunity

    As an Mechanical Designer, you will work with guidance and direction on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a Senior Engineer. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards / practices.

    Your Key Responsibilities

    • Conducts basic interpretations of drawings, codes, and other similar materials.
    • Performs Revit and/or AutoCAD design for the mechanical and plumbing disciplines.
    • Under the direction and mentorship of a senior engineer/designer, performs the following:
    • Works with architectural, interior, and other engineering disciplines in the coordination of the project.
    • Performs field work and provides field observation reports.
    • Performs basic calculations to analyze and design individual building mechanical system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
    • Performs other miscellaneous engineering tasks as required for the completion of projects.
    • Assists with engineering duties on projects of various complexity.
    • Assists with collecting data and gathering information to support design decisions.

    Qualifications

    Your Capabilities and Credentials

    • Basic understanding of Revit and AutoCad, and the use of it as a drafting/design tool.
    • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
    • Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
    • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, building program and other similar material.
    • Ability to take direction, follow process and accept feedback and suggestions from Senior Engineers
    • Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD; Prefer experience with Newforma, Trane Trace & IES.

    Education and Experience

    • 2 years of related professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated skills
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering
    • Co-op/Internship experience preferred.
    • EIT / FE certification preferred

    Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

    Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

    Salary Range(s):

    • $85,200 - $123,500 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in WA

    The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.

    Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

    Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.

    • Washington state employees are eligible to accrue 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked except for Seattle employees who accrue sick leave in accordance with the city’s paid sick leave law.

    The benefits information listed above may not apply to union positions because benefits for such positions are governed by applicable collective bargaining agreements.
