Mechanical Engineering Manager manages a team of mechanical engineers designing parts, engines, tools, or other mechanical equipment and industrial processes. Designs, scopes, and develops new mechanical engineering initiatives and projects, and manages them through their life cycles. Being a Mechanical Engineering Manager helps establish programs to support training, process improvements, and the creation and maintenance of best practices and protocols. Interfaces with other departments to identify new potential products and projects. Additionally, Mechanical Engineering Manager requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Mechanical Engineering Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Mechanical Engineering Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Mechanical Engineering Technician or Associate

  • The University of Virginia is accepting applications for a Mechanical Engineering Technician or Mechanical Engineering Associate to join the Design Services team within Facilities Management. The successful candidate will fill one of these positions based on their experience, education, skills, and abilities. We are a multi-discipline team engaged in all facets of building engineering and provide design services for a wide variety of University renovations including classrooms, labs, healthcare facilities, athletic facilities, and student housing. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the mission of the University while working in a collaborative and stimulating environment.

    Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

    Responsibilities:

    Mechanical Engineering Technicians:
    • Prepare construction documents for HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection design with oversight from senior team members.
    • Confirm existing conditions from drawing archives and site visits.
    • Drawing setup, drafting, and modeling using Revit for most projects
    • Adhere to and assist in developing department standards.
    • Participate in meetings with project managers, consulting architects and engineers, University end-users and staff, and others.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Mechanical Engineering Associates:

    In addition to duties listed above,
    • Provide engineering calculations and analysis of mechanical systems with oversight from senior team members.
    • Review submittals and perform construction administration services.
    • Provide project management support for mechanical and plumbing engineering specific projects.
    • Develop and maintain project workbook using eBuilder.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Required Qualifications:

    Mechanical Engineering Technicians:
    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • Four years of mechanical design experience
    • Proficiency in drafting mechanical systems (Revit preferred)


    Mechanical Engineering Associates:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, relevant experience in a technical field may be considered in lieu of a degree
    • Some building design and construction experience is typical
    • Proficiency in drafting mechanical systems (Revit preferred)
    • Applicants who successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam are preferred.


    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (both positions):
    • Use of critical thinking and the ability to communicate ideas.
    • Ability to meet preset deadlines.
    • Excellent written and oral communication.
    • Knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts and principles.
    • Proficiency in the use of technology, including design software, to perform engineering analysis and prepare construction documents.
    • Ability to communicate with stakeholders to present design options and explain selected solutions.
    • Excellent time management skills including the ability to manage individual’s work across multiple concurrent project schedules.


    Compensation:

    Minimum hiring rate for Engineering Technician - $24.03 per hour ($50,000 Annually)

    Minimum hiring rate for Engineering Associate - $66,000.

    Actual hiring rates commensurate with experience.

    Physical Demands (both positions):

    This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers, however, regular visits to inspect existing buildings construction sites will be required. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
