San Francisco State University, School of Engineering offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mechanical Engineering beginning August 7, 2024. We are primarily seeking applicants whose teaching and research interests can expand our capabilities in modern manufacturing technologies and/or mechanical design but will also consider candidates in other fields. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic community/department/program.

Required qualifications
• Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or a closely related field. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
• Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

Preferred qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in teaching mechanical engineering topics at undergraduate and graduate levels. Key areas of interest include but are not limited to: modern manufacturing and fabrication technology (with hands-on lab instruction), machine design, mechanical systems design, CAD, finite element methods, experimental and computational fatigue and failure mechanics, and capstone design projects.
• Research expertise in the areas of modern manufacturing technology (sustainable/smart/additive/bio manufacturing) and/or mechanical design (machine design, medical devices, product design). However, we actively encourage applications from strong candidates, irrespective of their specific area of specialization.
• Active record of scholarship related to their specialty area and evidence of external support or the potential for external funding of these activities.
• Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works.
• Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities.
• Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments.

About the School of Engineering

The School of Engineering (https://engineering.sfsu.edu) at San Francisco State University is the only four-year Engineering school in the City of San Francisco and has been a talent reservoir that serves a myriad of industries in the San Francisco Bay Area, in particular Silicon Valley, and throughout California. We pride ourselves in offering four ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering programs: civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering, as well as three master’s programs in civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering. In addition, we have established four accelerated BS/MS programs, or SF State Scholars Programs, where students can complete their BS and MS degrees in about 5 years. Together, these programs serve a highly diverse student body of 1,200 undergraduates and 100 graduate students, of which 42% are underrepresented minorities, 34% are first-generation students, and 18% are female students. Responsibilities

The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in Mechanical Engineering, mentoring and advising of graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active research and/or industry-sponsored program in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments.

Compensation

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is:

$100,000 to $103,500 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year).The anticipated hiring range is $8,333 to $8,625 per month.

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).

Professional development funds, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
