WKBT, the number one station in La Crosse, Wisconsin (DMA 129) seeks an experienced Assignment Desk Manager with outstanding news instincts, a passion to win, and the organizational skills to take our coverage to the next level.

The ideal candidate knows how to dig for stories, plan the day's coverage, and isn't afraid to throw everything out the window when spot news occurs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Oversee Assignment Desk operations.

• Assist with schedules.

• Organize the daily planner with an emphasis on Live Content, Severe Weather, and Breaking News.

• Arrange and supervise video feeds.

• Lead editorial meetings.

• Collaborate with MMJs and Producers to develop enterprise stories.

• Plan special event coverage by securing media credentials, making travel arrangements, and collaborating with partner stations.

• Develop contacts with local and regional governments, law enforcement, and media partners for potential stories.

• Monitor public safety radios and social media feeds for breaking news and other newsworthy information.

• Secure user-generated content with permission for use following proper protocols.

Skills & Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism required with three or more years of newsroom experience, preferably as an Assignments Editor or Producer.

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to guide early-career journalists through breaking news coverage.

• Must be decisive and possess strong news judgment.

• Ability to multi-task under extreme deadline pressure.

• Must be an excellent communicator.

• Must be competitive with a need to win the story of the day.

• Familiarity with the issues, concerns, and cultures that are unique to the DMA.

• Expert knowledge of local laws and state government.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and skill level.
