The Director of Engineering for WCMU Public Media is responsible for the management of broadcast engineering, including operations and maintenance for a four-station television and eight station radio network and engineer staff.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience that equates to four years.
Five years of broadcasting television and radio engineering experience.
Component level understanding of television production, distribution, UHF, VHF, and microwave transmission equipment.
Component level understanding of FM production, distribution, and transmission equipment.
Project management experience from design to implementation.
Experience creating and operating IP networks.
Experience with migration to fiber optic-based delivery to transmitter broadcast locations.
Understanding of FCC, FAA, NEC, OSHA, and MiOSHA regulations
Ability to use office productivity software.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively, internally and externally.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a management capacity in a broadcast/IP delivery environment.
Understanding of digital technology and how it can be employed effectively in radio and television broadcasting.
Experience and success in grant applications for external funding of equipment.
Experience in lease agreements, FCC guidelines and requirements.
Familiarity with live streaming and emerging technologies.
Familiar with the nextGen ATSC 3.0 capabilities and requirements.
Understanding of broadband capabilities to expand program dissemination.
Duties & Responsibilities
Manages and supervises maintenance and operational engineering staff of WCMU Public Media which includes television, radio stations and streaming of both through several platforms. Assuring efficient and effective operation.
Directs, coordinates, prioritizes engineering activities.
Monitors and assures compliance with current Federal Communications Commission, Federal Aviation Administration, National Electric Code, OSHA, and MiOHSA regulations.
Provides leadership and management of a team responding to changing needs, planning, and evaluation of engineering services.
Manages tower leases and relationships within the university to ensure necessary completion of projects through purchase orders, requests for proposal and inventory process.
Works with outside contractors to negotiate and complete projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
