Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical records. Being a Medical Assistant prepares treatment rooms for the examination of patients. May draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Additionally, Medical Assistant may perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RCA) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Medical Assistant works under moderate supervision. The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing patient care duties under the Medical Assistant scope of practice in the urgent care setting.

Essential Education, Experience and Skills :
Candidates in Arizona
Education : Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent; and
1. The medical assistant candidate has completed an APPROVED Medical Assistant Training Program*.
Certification is not required but is preferred.
Approved medical assistant training program, means a program accredited by one of the following two-accreditation organizations :
2. The medical assistant candidate has completed an UNAPPROVED medical assistant training program AND
Certification* is required.
Successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the following two agencies :
Certifying organizations accepted in Arizona are :
3. The medical assistant candidate is eligible for hire if they meet one of the following three (3) criteria within A., or B., or C
A. The medical assistant candidate completed an UNAPPROVED medical assistant training program AND
Was Employed as a medical assistant for one (1) year or more after program completion must have occurred prior to February 2, 2000,*; or
Candidates must complete the Arizona Medical Assistant Candidate Employment Attestation)
B. The medical assistant candidate was directly supervised by the SAME physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours (approximately working 40 hours / week for 12 months) prior to February 2, 2000,* ; or
Candidates must complete the Arizona Medical Assistant Candidate Employment Attestation)
C. The medical assistant completed a United States Armed Forces medical services training program*.
Candidates must complete the Arizona Medical Assistant Candidate Employment Attestation)
Employed in all states other than Arizona
Education : Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent; and
