The laboratory of Dr. Dominique Bergmann is seeking is seeking a driven and curious Research Technician to join our group at Stanford University. The Bergmann lab uses stomata (cellular valves on the surface of plants that enable exchange of atmospheric CO2for plant derived oxygen and water vapor) as a model for cell fate, cell polarity and flexible, adaptive development. We use a variety of genetic, genomic, imaging and modeling techniques to investigate tissue development, including following gene expression in individual cells and modifying the behavior of those cells in intact, developing organs. Using Arabidopsis and other plants, we extend the lab studies into natural environments to track plants' remarkable capacity to optimize development for the prevailing climate, or in anticipation of future climates. More information about ongoing research can be found on our website:

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about science and wishes to contribute to furthering our understanding in new areas in gene regulation, cell size control, tissue coordination and environmental plasticity. The team member will be an integral member of our team whose responsibilities will be to provide general lab support to the team (50%) and to work directly with a postdoctoral scholar to create and analyze new transgenics that allow us to monitor gene and protein activity in live, developing tissues.

Ideal candidates will be determined, creative, and willing to tackle novel challenges. The candidate will need to be comfortable managing their time and multiple priorities. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent college graduate who would like to gain more hands-on research experience in an academic laboratory environment before attending graduate school in the biological sciences. We have a strong preference for team members willing to commit to a 2-year position.

    What we provide:

    • A fun, positive, and inclusive research environment.

    • Training in standard techniques in molecular biology, genetics, microscopy and image analysis.

    • Training in science writing and communication.

    • 1:1 mentorship while also working collaboratively as part of a team.

    • Opportunities for professional and educational development and growth, including assistance in preparing for graduate school applications and interviews.

    • Contributing to exciting research projects with potential for authorship on research papers and the opportunity to present original work at scientific meetings.

    • Access to the vibrant SF Bay area research community including Stanford University, the Stanford School of Medicine, UCSF, UC Berkeley, CZI, UCSC and UC Davis

    • A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.

    • An opportunity to live and work in the inclusive and cosmopolitan San Francisco Bay area, amidst the beauty of Northern California.

    What you'll do:

    • Using molecular cloning and/or CRISPR techniques, generate plants with modified gene activity or expressing specific protein reporters.

    • Grow, harvest, archive and distribute Arabidopsis plants and seeds.

    • Potential to use advanced imaging techniques on live samples.

    • Document reagents and protocols to ensuring lab adheres to chemical safety initiatives.

    • Collect, verify, record and compile data and information in a detailed lab notebook.

    • Assist with experimental design and establishing new protocols and maintaining lab equipment.

    • Help with lab organization and other support duties relating to lab operations as required, while looking for ways to improve lab processes.

    • Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area.

    • You will perform tasks related to the research project independently while under the guidance and mentorship of mentors.

    What you bring:

    • Bachelor's degree in life science

    • Background training and knowledge of molecular and cell biology techniques.

    • Strong interpersonal skills, in addition to the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

    • Excellent analytical, communication, and computer skills, with attention to detail.

    • Strong self-motivation with excellent time management and organizational skills.

    • Passion for science and continuous education, actively seeking opportunities to increase skills and expertise.

    • Ability to learn complex tasks with instruction, and to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques.

    • Prior experience working in a research lab (beyond undergraduate laboratory courses) is desired but not required.

      • Knowledge of basic laboratory practices and techniques.

      • Molecular cloning skills preferred

      • Familiarity with R and Python preferred
