Job Summary
The Credentialing Specialist will conduct the investigation necessary to credential applicants for privileges and/or appointment to the Medical Staff, locum tenens practitioners, the Limited Health Practitioner-Advanced Staff, the Limited Health Practitioner Staff, the Physician Paramedical Employee Staff, and the Affiliate Staff. This individual will perform these credentialing and privileging activities and provide Medical Staff Leadership with a critical analysis of findings to assure sufficient information is available to enable them to make appropriate credentialing and privileging decisions. This individual will coordinate and manage the reappointment of credentialed practitioners, will coordinate and manage meetings of the organized Medical Staff (also including department, section, and committee meetings) and maintain minutes of these meetings, and will assist with the transfer of information throughout the Medical Staff organization. This individual will also play an active role in maintaining credentials files, data bases, and information verifications that are the responsibility of Medical Staff Services
Essential Functions
- Performs clerical duties and provides assistance with Medical Staff activities as requested by Medical Staff Leadership, other Medical Staff Services personnel, and the Chief Medical Officer
- Receives, screens, and re-directs incoming calls and visitors in a courteous and professional manner
- Orders supplies to facilitate daily departmental activities
- Assists with payroll activities
- Maintains the schedule and manages set-up of Medical Staff Meetings
- Prepares meeting calendar, meeting agendas and minutes of assigned meetings
- Assures the appropriate reporting of committee and department actions to the MEC
- Notifies meeting attendees of upcoming meetings, cancellations, etc.
- Maintains the practitioner directories and data bases
- Performs literature searches and retrieves articles for credentialed practitioners
- Initiates and follows through on requests for privileges and/or appointment to the staff categories previously noted (initial applicants and applications for reappointment
- Verifies through the original source or an equivalent source, the statements made by each applicant within the application
- Processes the many types of background checks performed pertinent to each applicant
- Reviews each application and documentation gathered in support thereof for completeness and accuracy, and prepares this information for review and recommendation by the Department Chair, Section Chair, Credentials Committee, and Medical Executive Committee
- On an ongoing basis, tracks the progress of applications for appointment, reappointment, and clinical privileges and initiates appropriate follow-up for issues that require further investigation
- Works in concert with Quality Management staff with regard to professional performance evaluation processes (IPPE, OPPE, etc.)
- Disseminates information regarding appointment and privileging to hospital departments with a need to know
- Provides non-clinical orientation to new members of the Medical Staff, LHP-A staff, LHP staff, and PPE staff
- Provides assistance to students, residents, and fellows completing educational rotations at Southeast
- Maintains a working knowledge of the Hospital, Joint Commission, CMS, and State Department of Health and License Board requirements relative to credentialing, appointment, and privileging of practitioners
- Carries out all job responsibilities while maintaining confidentiality of patient, credentialing, peer review, and administrative information
- Performs other duties and provides assistance as assigned or directed by the Medical Staff Services Manager and others relative to chain of command

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Medical staff credentialing processes preferred
- Knowledge of TJC, CMS, and Federal and State Regulations preferred
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred
- CPCS - Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist Upon hire or within 5 years of employment required
